Every season, college football teams make headlines with flashy uniforms. Some teams like Penn State keep it classic and rarely or never wear alternates, while other teams like Oregon sport a different look week in and week out. 25. TCU Horned Frogs
Prior to last year’s uniform overhaul, TCU would have ranked number one on this list. Now, they are on the list solely for a rant. Nike ruined the Horned Frogs’ uniforms. Formerly featuring a “frog skin” pattern on the helmets and jerseys along with a pattern around the neck, the purple and black jerseys were the coolest in the sport. Now, all the patterns have been removed and the uniforms are very minimalistic. The only thing they have going for them is the purple and black color combination.
24. USC Trojans
You can’t see USC’s cardinal and gold uniforms and not think of Matt Barkley or Reggie Bush. The minimalistic look with the lack of names on the back of the jerseys makes them a college football staple.
23. UCLA Bruins
UCLA’s combination of powder blue and gold brings together two of the best colors in the sport. Their “Bruin Block” font ties it all together.
22. LSU Tigers
LSU is one team where their white uniforms are more iconic than any other uniform option. One of few teams that opts to wear their white uniforms at home, the Tigers’ primary uniform is a classic look.
21. North Carolina Tar Heels
Tar Heel blue admittedly looks better on a basketball uniform, but it cannot be ignored on the gridiron. North Carolina’s look may not be a college football classic due to relevancy, but the Tar Heels have one of the more aesthetically pleasing uniforms out there.
20. Alabama Crimson Tide
It doesn’t hit quite the same as Penn State, but Alabama typically always sticks to their crimson and white uniforms. The clean, minimalistic look suits them and is one of the sport’s classic looks that should never ever change.
19. BYU Cougars
As mentioned with North Carolina, the powder blue does not miss. BYU’s uniforms are simple, but they are clean and they get the job done. They typically always stick with the same look, which counts for something in today’s day and age of college football.
18. Cincinnati Bearcats
Something about the italic numbers on Cincinnati’s uniforms just makes them scream “Bearcats.” The usage of the “C” logo within the text on the front of the jersey is cool, and they often wear complete blackout uniforms, which is one of the best and most intimidating looks you can get in football.
17. Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona State’s maroon and yellow is different from any other color scheme in college football. The pitchfork on the side of the helmet is a cool look. No player rocked this uniform harder than Cam Skattebo did a season ago, and the uniforms match their former star running back’s gritty mentality.
16. Miami Hurricanes
There can be an argument made that Miami’s shade of green and orange don’t go great together, but the two colors just scream Miami when combined together. The Canes have a number of different combinations, all giving a classic feel.
15. North Texas Mean Green
They’re fairly simple, but North Texas’ uniforms are very cool. The Eagle wings on the sides of the helmet paired with their specific shade of green is very crisp and is one of the better non-power four uniforms.
14. Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee’s jersey numbers stand out, and their shade of Volunteer orange is special in a way that no other team can replicate. Their smoky gray uniforms are some of the cooler alternates in the sport.
13. Kansas Jayhawks
Historically one of the worst power four conference teams, Kansas’ uniforms are not as bad as their program. The huge Jayhawk on the side of the helmet is intimidating, and the “Kansas” text across the front of the uniforms stands out. The plethora of options between blue, red, and black uniforms allow flexibility.
12. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Coastal Carolina’s teal and black color combination is extremely pure. The black uniforms look even fresher on their teal field. Recently transitioning (2017) to the FBS, the Chanticleers have made a statement both with their play and their appearance.
11. UCF Knights
UCF’s classic black and gold is a great look, but one of the cooler modern traditions is their space game where they bring out a new space-themed uniform once a year due to their close proximity to NASA. While there are varying thoughts on the appearance of the uniforms, it is a fun tradition each year.
10. Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss’ recent shift back to powder blue uniforms was a good decision. The color, worn by the Rebels in the 1940s and returning briefly in the late ‘80s, is one of the purest colors in football and pairs well with their red and white.
9. San Diego State Aztecs
The Aztec calendar is showcased on the helmet and the sleeves of San Diego State’s uniform, one of the most visually pleasing and symbolic uniforms in the sport. Any black uniform with a splash of color mixed in is a winner in my book, and San Diego State gets the job done.
8. Maryland Terrapins
Under Armour’s version of Oregon flies under the radar uniform-wise. Maryland comes out week in and week out with a different uniform, but often sports some of the most interesting helmets in the game reflecting the Maryland state flag. Love it or hate it, it is a cool look.
7. Florida State Seminoles
Florida State’s allegiance with the Seminole tribe comes out on their uniforms, and makes for some of the coolest college football threads. From the arrow on the side of the helmet to the tribal symbols on the sleeves, there aren’t many uniform rankings that won’t have the Seminoles graded in the top ten.
6. Texas Longhorns
Texas’ burnt orange is another classic look that you really cannot go wrong with. The color itself is associated with Texas and makes fans think of Vince Young or Ricky Williams. The Longhorns hardly ever wear alternates for good reason.
5. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
The Rainbow Warriors’ green and black color combination is extremely satisfying, but aside from their primary uniforms, one of the coolest alternates is their rainbow alternate. One of the signature features of the state of Hawaii pours in on the shoulders and pants with subtle stripes. They don’t bring them out often but when they do, they are among the best uniforms in the sport.
4. Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State has one of college football’s classic looks. The lack of names on the jerseys, the navy blue paired with the plain white helmets – the simplistic look is a home run for the Nittany Lions.
3. Oregon Ducks
Can’t put them number one given that they have a different uniform every week, but there is no denying that Nike cranks out super cool uniforms week after week for the Ducks. With all of the different uniform combinations out there, Oregon has to rank top three.
2. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
No helmet tops the signature golden helmet of Notre Dame. Paired with the navy jerseys and golden pants, the Fighting Irish have one of college football’s classic looks. The glimmer of the golden helmet under the lights is unmatched.
1. Ohio State Buckeyes
Everything about Ohio State’s uniforms is perfect. From the Buckeye leaves on the helmet to the shoulder stripes and the cohesiveness of the gray helmet with the scarlet jerseys, Ohio State has the cleanest look in college football.
