Rays Finalizing A Deal For Nelson Cruz
3 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays are finalizing a deal on Thursday to acquire designated hitter Nelson Cruz from the Minnesota Twins, according to sources. The 41-year-old slugger was widely speculated as one of the most likely bats to be dealt at this year's trade deadline, and the Rays have been rumored to be interested for weeks. Despite his age, the Boomstick hasn't really slowed down at the plate, slashing .294/.370/.537 with 19 long balls, 44 runs, 50 RBI and even three steals. He'll slot into the middle of a strong Rays lineup at DH, which means that Austin Meadows and Manuel Margot (when he's back from the injured list) figure to platoon in right field the rest of the way. There's also a chance that top prospect Wander Franco, who has struggled so far at the major league level, is sent back down to the farm for more seasoning. The Rays also received 25-year-old right-hander Calvin Faucher from Minnesota. The 10th-round pick in 2017 had a rough 7.04 ERA, 2.05 WHIP and 42/24 K/BB in 30 2/3 relief innings over 19 appearances for Double-A Wichita before the trade.
