Philadelphia Phillies right-handed pitching prospect
Andrew Painter allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out seven against Triple-A Omaha. Painter continued his rough August and was roughed up a bit in this one despite missing some bats. He racked up 18 whiffs on 46 swings, leaning heavily on his changeup, which produced 13. The poor outing has amounted to a 7.77 ERA, 1.93 WHIP, and a 27:16 K:BB in 24 1/3 innings for the month. The right-hander frequently struggles against left-handed hitters, giving up a .287 batting average. The top prospect has high-quality stuff and the ability to strike batters out, but the consistency with his command isn't there at the moment. He could still be in consideration for an end-of-season promotion, but it seems less likely.

Jason Alexander had his swing-and-miss stuff working during Thursday's outing against the Colorado Rockies. Alexander came into this game allowing two earned runs or less in five straight outings. The Rockies were able to do some damage to Alexander, but he was still able to have success. Alexander tossed 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out a season-high eight batters. The right-hander has pitched well with a 2.96 ERA over 48.2 innings since joining Houston. He has been a decent streaming option, but his value will take a hit with his next outing being against the New York Yankees.

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher
Logan Webb looked sharp on the mound once again during Thursday's game against the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander entered this game on a hot stretch with one earned run allowed or less in four of his last five starts. Webb tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in the no-decision on Thursday. He gave up quite a few hits in this one, but didn't allow any damage after an
Ian Happ RBI single in the first inning. Webb will take a 3.19 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 187/37 K/BB ratio into his next start versus the Colorado Rockies. It's worth noting that he'll be pitching in Coors Field, so his fantasy value will take a hit.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder
Kyle Schwarber broke out of his slump in a big way during Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. He got the fun started off early with a solo home run in the first inning. Schwarber followed that with a two-run blast in the fourth and a three-run round-tripper in the fifth inning. Somehow, Schwarber wasn't done as he connected on another three-run homer in the seventh inning. He finished this game 4-for-6 with four homers and nine RBI in the blowout victory. Schwarber became the fourth player in team history to hit four home runs in a single game. The veteran slugger now is leading the National League in home runs with 49 on the season. Schwarber also has a league-leading 119 RBI on the season as he truly deserves to be in the conversation for NL MVP.

Chicago White Sox infielder
Miguel Vargas (wrist) was forced to make an early exit from Thursday's game against the New York Yankees. Vargas was attempting to make a catch at first base when Yankees' outfielder
Aaron Judge ran into his arm which bent back his wrist. Vargas exited the contest and finished the game 1-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. The team is calling the injury a wrist contusion, but Vargas is likely going to undergo further imaging. For now, fantasy managers should consider Vargas as day-to-day.
Curtis Mead moved over to first base and could see increased time at the cold corner if Vargas is forced to miss time.

Texas Rangers shortstop
Corey Seager (abdomen) underwent a successful appendectomy on Thursday. He was diagnosed with appendicitis and required emergency surgery. The expectation is that Seager will return at some point this season. The Rangers expect Seager to miss a few weeks, but he shouldn't be done for the 2025 campaign.
Josh Smith figures to be the primary shortstop until Seager is ready to return. The Rangers haven't officially placed Seager on the injured list, but that move should happen this weekend.

Houston Astros reliever
Bryan Abreu collected his fourth save of the year in a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. Abreu threw a scoreless, one-hit ninth inning, struck out two, and racked up 11 strikes on 12 pitches. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run in August over a dozen appearances and 13 innings, and he has given up just five hits while totaling 17 strikeouts against three walks. With star closer
Josh Hader (shoulder) out of commission because of a shoulder injury, Abreu has gotten all but one of the Astros' five saves in August. Hader is likely done for the regular season, meaning Abreu should continue to serve as the Astros' top choice for saves. Between his superb work as a setup man and a closer this year, Abreu has been one of the game's elite relievers. He has recorded a spectacular 1.47 ERA with a .98 WHIP, 93:25 K:BB, and 25 holds in 61 1/3 innings.

Chicago Cubs closer
Daniel Palencia (1-4) took his fourth loss of the season in a 4-3 defeat against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Palencia entered to pitch the bottom of the ninth in a 3-3 game and retired the first batter he faced before surrendering three straight singles - two softly hit balls and a walk-off line drive by
Jung Hoo Lee. The right-handed Palencia has slumped a bit this month, having given up five earned runs on 13 hits and four walks (12 strikeouts) in 9 1/3 innings. Overall, though, Palencia has been outstanding this season. He owns a 2.06 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP, 54:15 K:BB, and 20 saves across 48 frames.

St. Louis Cardinals reliever
JoJo Romero closed out a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday to log his fifth save of the season. Romero allowed one hit and no runs in a 12-pitch ninth inning, extending his modest scoreless streak to five appearances. The Cardinals haven't named a closer since they traded
Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets on July 30, but Romero has gotten the lion's share of the team's saves this month. The lefty has been effective regardless of role this year, having pitched to a 2.25 ERA (3.29 FIP) with a 1.29 WHIP, 45:22 K:BB, and 19 holds in 48 innings.

New York Mets designated hitter
Jesse Winker (back) started a rehab assignment with Single-A St. Lucie on Wednesday, but he's still dealing with "intermittent back pain." Winker has missed a month and a half with lower-back inflammation, and he'll only return in 2025 if he's able to manage the pain. This may end up as a lost season for Winker, who also missed a large chunk of time earlier in the year with an oblique strain. The 32-year-old has appeared in a meager 26 games and hit .229/.309/.400 with one homer, 10 RBI, and eight runs scored in 81 plate appearances. The Mets have typically gone with either
Starling Marte or
Mark Vientos at DH in Winker's absence.

Miami Marlins third baseman
Connor Norby (wrist) is expected to come off the 10-day injured list on Friday. Norby has been on the shelf with a broken left hamate bone since July 12 and had to undergo surgery to repair it. The 25-year-old has played in 72 games this season and hit .241/.289/.364 with six homers, 26 RBI, 33 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 273 plate appearances.
Maximo Acosta and
Javier Sanoja have been splitting time at third base lately, but Norby should return as the starter at the hot corner. He went a sizzling 10-for-25 with three HRs over eight games and 29 plate appearances during his Triple-A rehab assignment.

The Texas Rangers will transfer outfielder
Evan Carter (wrist) to the 60-day injured list on Friday, which will end his season. Carter won't have enough time to make it back in September after he fractured his right wrist on a hit by pitch on Aug. 21. The oft-injured Carter played in just 45 games last year and was only able to suit up for 63 this season. He hit .247/.336/.392 with five homers, 25 RBI, 31 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 220 plate appearances in 2025. Set to turn 23 years old on Friday, Carter will come back next season looking to put together his first healthy campaign. With Carter unavailable, the Rangers have been using
Wyatt Langford and
Michael Helman in center field.

New York Yankees pitcher
Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) is set to return to the team as a relief pitcher, according to manager Aaron Boone. The southpaw is currently on the 15-day injured list due to an oblique issue. This season, Yarbrough owns a 3.90 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 49/17 K/BB ratio across 16 appearances (eight starts) with the Yankees. Yarbrough is eligible to return from the injured list on Saturday. That is good news for the Yankees bullpen, but Yarbrough won't offer much fantasy value as a reliever.

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle is scheduled to make his MLB debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Wow, that was quick as Tolle was selected by the Red Sox in the second-round of the 2024 draft. He holds a 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 133/23 K/BB ratio across 20 appearances in three different minor league levels this season. This is a favorable matchup for Tolle against a lackluster Pirates lineup. It's unclear if this is a one time start or if Tolle will remain in the rotation long term. The 22-year-old has pitched well enough in the minors to earn streaming appeal in most fantasy formats for his debut on Friday.

New York Yankees relief pitcher
Jonathan Loaisiga (elbow) will miss the rest of the 2025 season, according to manager Aaron Boone. Loaisiga has been sidelined since the beginning of August due a right flexor strain. The right-hander won't pitch again this season, but has avoided having surgery. That means, Loaisiga should be ready to go for the beginning of the 2026 season. He'll finish this campaign with a 4.25 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and a 25/10 K/BB ratio across 29.2 innings.
