Shohei Ohtani to Make Next Start on Wednesday
Shohei Ohtani will make his next scheduled start on the mound Wednesday against the Angels, manager Dave Roberts told reporters. The plan is for Ohtani to throw four innings against his former team. Ohtani reached the four-inning mark for the first time this season in his previous start on Aug. 6 against the St. Louis Cardinals. He held them to one run on two hits while striking out eight and issuing no walks. Ohtani has made eight short starts this year in his return from 2023 Tommy John surgery and recorded stellar numbers across the board. The two-way sensation has put up a 2.37 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP, 25 strikeouts, and five walks in 19 innings.Source: Fabian Ardaya - The Athletic
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander/designated hitter Brendan Donovan Dealing With Groin Injury
Brendan Donovan (groin) was out of the lineup against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday with tightness in his left groin, Jeff Jones of the BND reports. It's unknown if Donovan will also need off on Sunday, so fantasy managers should check back for more information. Thomas Saggese filled in at second base for him Saturday, while outfielder Lars Nootbaar took over the leadoff spot in the Cardinals' lineup. Donovan made his first All-Star team this year and has hit .278/.349/.402 with nine homers, 43 RBI, 57 runs scored, and three stolen bases in 466 plate appearances. He's off to a slow start in August, though, having gone 4-for-24 with no home runs and one RBI in six games.Source: Jeff Jones
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman/outfielder Luis Severino Goes on 15-Day Injured List With Oblique Strain
Luis Severino (oblique) on the 15-day injured list with a strained left oblique and recalled southpaw Hogan Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas. The A's put Severino on the IL retroactive to Aug. 6, though the severity of his injury is unclear. The 31-year-old combined to allow only eight earned runs in 23 innings in his four most recent starts, but his overall production still leaves plenty to be desired. Severino has gone 6-11 with a 4.82 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 103:44 in 136 1/3 innings. His strikeout rate of 6.8 per nine is the lowest of his career. With Severino down, 22-year-old righty Luis Morales will make the first start of his career Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles.Source: Athletics
The Athletics have placed right-hander Luis Morales Starting on Sunday
Luis Morales is scheduled to take the mound for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. The 22-year-old is set to make his first career start in the big leagues. Morales made one appearance for the A's before this and threw two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits. The expectation is that Morales will have a limited workload on the mound. The right-hander has a tremendous fastball, but control has been an issue for him. There is plenty of long term upside there, but Morales is unlikely to pitch deep into this game. He'll only offer low-end streaming appeal for Sunday's contest.Source: Martin Gallegos
Athletics starting pitcher Roki Sasaki Beginning Rehab Assignment on Thursday
Roki Sasaki (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday. The right-hander threw a successful three-inning simulated game on Friday. He's now ready to take the next step by starting a rehab assignment. The plan is for Sasaki to throw three innings during his outing on Thursday. Sasaki will need to build back up his stamina considering he has been sidelined since mid-May due to a right shoulder issue. The hope is that Sasaki can return by September. He's worth stashing in most fantasy formats if you have an IR spot available.Source: Bill Plunkett
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Wenceel Perez Makes Early Exit on Saturday
Wenceel Perez (leg) was forced to make an early exit from Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Perez fouled a ball off his leg during the second inning of this contest. He stayed in the game, but was eventually replaced by Zach McKinstry in the fifth inning. The expectation is that Perez will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the issue. For now, fantasy managers should consider Perez as day-to-day. He went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single and a triple before exiting the contest. UPDATE: Tests on Perez's right foot came back negative, and he's dealing with a right-foot contusion. It is painful and swollen, but Perez doesn't have structural damage.Source: Chris McCosky
Detroit Tigers outfielder Taylor Walls Scratched from Saturday's Lineup
Taylor Walls (groin) was scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Walls reportedly played through a groin issue on Friday, but it was too much for him to play on Saturday. As a result, Walls will be pulled from the lineup, but he might be available off the bench. In his absence, Ha-Seong Kim will take over at shortstop and bat seventh versus right-hander Logan Evans. Fantasy managers should consider Walls as day-to-day until further notice.Source: mlb.com
Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Joey Loperfido Continues Sitting Out
Joey Loperfido (knee) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This marks the third game in a row that Loperfido has been out of the starting lineup due to a right knee contusion. For now, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day, but he could land on the injured list if he doesn't get better soon. In the meantime, Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho, and Myles Straw will cover the outfield on Saturday. Fantasy managers should check back on Sunday for another update on his status.Source: mlb.com
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Trevor Larnach Remains Out on Saturday
Trevor Larnach (side) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Larnach will head to the bench for the third straight game while he recovers from a left side injury. He hasn't been placed on the injured list, so for now Larnach should be considered day-to-day. Carson McCusker will cover designated hitter while Alan Roden takes over in left field during Saturday's game. Fantasy managers should check back on Sunday for another update on his status.Source: mlb.com
Minnesota Twins outfielder Will Smith Absent from Saturday's Lineup
Will Smith is absent from the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Smith will head to the bench after going hitless over his last three games. This will be a routine rest day for Smith, so fantasy managers should expect him to be back there on Sunday. Dalton Rushing will do the catching and bat ninth versus right-hander Chris Bassitt on Saturday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Smith heading to the bench.Source: mlb.com
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Adael Amador Heading to the Bench
Adael Amador will head to the bench ahead of Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went hitless during his first two games since being promoted, so he'll take a seat on Saturday. Amador has good potential as a player long-term, but has struggled to adjust to the big league level. The 22-year-old is not worth rostering in fantasy formats at the moment. Kyle Farmer will take over at second base and bat ninth versus left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on Saturday.Source: mlb.com
Colorado Rockies infielder Brendan Donovan Scratched on Saturday
Brendan Donovan (undisclosed) has been scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs. There is no word on why Donovan was scratched yet. He was set to leadoff and play second base, but will now hit the bench. Lars Nootbaar will take over in the leadoff spot while Thomas Saggese covers second base versus right-hander Colin Rea on Saturday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups ahead of first pitch.Source: mlb.com
St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tylor Megill Nearing Rehab Assignment
Tylor Megill (elbow) came out of a live batting practice session on Thursday unscathed and could begin a rehab assignment soon, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. Megill has been down since mid-June with a sprained right elbow, which interrupted a solid first half of the season for the 30-year-old. Despite a high walk rate (4.35 per nine), Megill recorded a respectable 3.95 ERA with an eye-opening 89 strikeouts over 68 1/3 innings in his first 14 starts of the season. A return doesn't seem imminent, but if the struggling Frankie Montas doesn't turn things around, a healthy Megill could replace him in the Mets' rotation.Source: SNY
New York Mets right-hander Paul Blackburn Throws 97 Pitches in Rehab Start
Paul Blackburn (shoulder) made another rehab start at the Triple-A level on Friday and built up to 97 pitches. Blackburn lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts against no walks. Blackburn, on the IL since July 3 with a shoulder impingement, has made four straight starts at Triple-A and yielded six earned runs across 22 1/3 innings. It has been a much different story in the majors, though, as opposing offenses have tattooed Blackburn for a 7.71 ERA over six appearances (four starts) and 18 2/3 frames. The Mets are still deciding whether he'll make another rehab start.Source: MiLB.com
New York Mets right-hander Reed Garrett to Open for Mets on Saturday
Reed Garrett will serve as the opener in their game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. Right-hander Frankie Montas is expected to work as the Mets' bulk reliever, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Garrett hasn't lasted more than two innings in any of his 48 appearances this year, but he has pitched to a sterling 2.51 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP and 54:22 K:BB over 46 2/3 frames. Montas, on the other hand, has fared poorly across seven appearances (all starts). The 32-year-old has a 6.68 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP, 29 strikeouts, and 10 walks in 33 2/3 innings. After allowing five or more earned runs in back-to-back starts, the Mets will try him out of the bullpen Saturday.Source: Will Sammon - The Athletic
