Nationals To Acquire Alcides Escobar
3 years agoThe Washington Nationals are in the process of acquiring veteran shortstop Alcides Escobar from the Kansas City Royals, according to sources. The Nationals are in desperate need of middle infield help with Trea Turner (finger) nursing a jammed finger and Jordy Mercer (quadriceps) going on the injured list on Friday. They were forced to start Humberto Arteaga at shortstop on Friday after calling him up. Backup catcher Alex Avila got the nod at second base on Thursday. Escobar, 34, was last in the Show in 2018 with the Royals, when he hit .231/.279/.313 with four home runs, 34 RBI and eight steals in 140 games. He was hitting .274 with five home runs, 16 RBI and two steals at Triple-A Omaha this season in 35 games. Don't expect the veteran infielder to be much more than a short-term placeholder.
