New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer is desperate to secure a spot on the roster for the start of the season. "I want to be in that opening-night roster and there's still some things I got to work on in the gym, on the ice," said Schaefer on TSN Radio 1050. "I think just getting stronger is the thing for me." The top draft picks usually make their NHL debut the following season, but there is a recent example of a player not jumping straight into action with Buffalo's Owen Power. Schaefer will turn 18 just before the start of training camp in September. He's very raw and inexperienced and may initially struggle to find his footing in the NHL. However, the opportunity is there for him to carve out a significant role on the Islanders' blue line after Noah Dobson was traded to the Montreal Canadiens.--Taavi PailkRead More News
