Marwin Gonzalez Agrees To Join Red Sox
4 years agoThe Boston Red Sox agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with free-agent utility man Marwin Gonzalez on Thursday, according to a source. The Toronto Blue Jays were also interested in him. The 31-year-old has played every position except pitcher and catcher in his nine-year career. He also switch hits and should see plenty of time in the outfield and at first base for Boston in 2021. Alex Verdugo and Hunter Renfroe are the only current starters in the outfield, although the BoSox could still re-sign Jackie Bradley Jr. Franchy Cordero will also compete for a spot, and Kike Hernandez provides depth as well. Gonzalez has hit .261 against both lefties and righties. He had a down year in 2020 with the Twins, but the veteran utility man should see fairly consistent at-bats around the diamond to at least be a versatile depth option in AL-only leagues.
