Latavius Murray 2021 Outlook: Like an Old Reliable SUV
3 years agoEven though he's 31 years old, Latavius Murray is still just as valuable as he's been the past two seasons. There are very few fantasy assets with minimal uncertainty. Murray is one of them. He's been in New Orleans for two seasons now and pretty much posted identical numbers in each year. In 2019, Murray totaled 872 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns. In 2020, Murray totaled 832 yards from scrimmage in one fewer game and five touchdowns. He carried the ball exactly 146 times in 2019 and 2020. He's going to see about a 35% snap share, 8-10 carries a game, the occasional couple targets, and will randomly rip off some big games when he scores. Murray provides value in two ways. He's a guy you can plug in any given week and know you're not getting zero. And he's the clear and obvious beneficiary should Alvin Kamara get hurt. You may be thinking to yourself that 2021 could be very different without Drew Brees, but over the past two seasons, Murray has played in nine games without Brees and actually averages 10.33 ppg in those games against 9.11 ppg with Brees. Murray's ADP will be the same place it's always been as an RB3 with a decent weekly floor and an injury-based ceiling. He's a great option as your fantasy RB3/4.
8/26/21 Update: Second-year former UDFA running back, Tony Jones, has impressed in preseason action. Sean Payton even went so far as to declare Jones the RB2 "as of right now." By no means is this a death sentence to Latavius Murray, but Jones is nine years younger than Murray, so a changing of the guard is not out of the realm of possibilities. At this point, I have Murray and Jones adjacent in my ranks. I want whoever wins this job as my RB4/5, but it's far more murky than initially thought.
