Jonnu Smith Expected To Be Ready For Camp
3 years agoNew England Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith (hamstring) and outside linebacker Chase Winovich are both expected to be ready for training camp next week after missing minicamp sessions, according to sources. Smith suffered a minor hamstring injury over a month ago, so barring any setbacks, he should be fine moving forward. He'll be competing for snaps and targets with fellow tight end Hunter Henry in what will likely be a run-first offense, so fantasy managers shouldn't consider Smith anything more than a high-end TE2. Henry has more experience working down the seam, and the QB situation is shaky in New England with a competition coming in training camp between Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones. The 25-year-old has good speed and plenty of after-the-catch ability -- 9.0 average yards after the catch in 2018 and 7.8 in 2019 -- but he could be asked to do a lot of blocking when he's on the field at the same time as Henry. Winovich was present for offseason workouts but was absent during minicamp for unknown reasons. The third-year pass-rusher is expected to be part of a deeper rotation along the edge after the team acquired Kyle Van Noy and Matt Judon in the offseason.
