Eduardo Rodriguez, Tigers Agree On Five-Year Deal
3 years agoThe Detroit Tigers and left-handed starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez agreed to a five-year deal worth at least $77 million on Monday. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the second year, plus incentives. The Tigers continue to transition from a rebuild towards contention, and boosting their young pitching staff with E-Rod is a start. Since the Red Sox gave Rodriguez a qualifying offer, which he declined, the Tigers will give up a third-round pick. The southpaw will help bolster a rotation alongside young arms like Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning, all of whom were rookies in 2021. Spencer Turnbull (elbow) is expected to miss most, if not all, of next year, and Matthew Boyd (elbow) is expected to miss the start of 2022. The 28-year-old Rodriguez didn't have great surface stats in 2021, but he was a 19-game winner in 2019 and could be a steal in fantasy drafts next spring.
