Dodgers Agree With Jimmy Nelson
5 years agoThe Los Angeles Dodgers and starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson agreed to a one-year major league deal on Tuesday with a vesting mutual option for another season, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. He's guaranteed to make $1.25 million in 2020 but could make more than $3 million if he's healthy. Nelson's incentive-laden contract could surpass $13 million over two seasons. The 30-year-old missed all of 2018 with a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder and also had elbow issues that held him to just 10 games (three starts) while going 0-2 with a 6.95 ERA, 26 strikeouts and 17 walks in 22 innings. He went 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts in 2017, so Nelson can be an effective back-of-the-rotation starter if he can stay healthy. He's expected to compete with Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin for the fifth spot in LA's rotation in 2020.
