Austin Nola Not Expected Back Before All-Star Break
3 years agoSan Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that it's safe to assume catcher Austin Nola (knee) won't return to the team until after the All-Star break. Nola caught a bullpen session last week and will catch some more on Monday, but he has yet to embark on a minor league rehab assignment and has been out since May 24. The 31-year-old has played in just 18 games for the Friars this year due to hand and knee injuries, and he's hitting just .217/.373/.326 with a home run and 11 RBI in 59 plate appearances. Nola has a little pop and can be useful in deeper two-catcher leagues when healthy, but he also figures to share playing time with Victor Caratini, who has held his own as San Diego's primary backstop with Nola hurt for much of the season.
