Aristides Aquino Has Minor League Options Left
5 years agoCincinnati Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino, who burst onto the scene in 2019, has minor league options remaining, which will make it even tougher to crack the Opening Day roster after the Reds added outfielders Nick Castellanos and Shogo Akiyama in free agency. Aquino hit .320 with 14 home runs and a 1.160 OPS in his first month in the majors, but he batted just .196 with five home runs and a .619 OPS in September. The 25-year-old (26 in April) punished balls in the strike zone, but he swung and missed on 38 percent of the breaking balls he offered at outside the zone. Aquino set major league records with the fewest plate appearances to 15 home runs (122) and fewest games to 14 home runs (28). There's some real power here, but the strikeouts also piled up. Aquino might need an injury to get consistent playing time in the majors in 2020, so he's mostly just a late-round upside flier for outfield depth in mixed redraft leagues.
