4 mins agoThe Cincinnati Reds transferred infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) to the 60-day injured list on Monday and selected the contract of right-hander Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. Encarnacion-Strand is dealing with a right ulnar styloid fracture in his wrist and has been on the injured list since May 8. The 24-year-old isn't expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment anytime soon and has reportedly been considering having season-ending surgery to fix ligament damage. His rehab process was put on hold earlier this month after he sought a second opinion on his injury. Fantasy managers that have been stashing the power-hitting corner infielder should have a better idea later this week as to whether he'll have a shot to return in the second half of the season. CES was hitting just .190 (22-for-116) with two homers and 16 RBI at the time of his injury.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Cincinnati Reds

8 mins agoWashington Nationals outfield prospect Dylan Crews is being promoted to Triple-A Rochester this week, according to a source. Crews had been red-hot at Double-A Harrisburg and hit .274/.343/.446 with five home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, 38 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 26 runs scored overall in his 51 games played. The Nationals are rewarding the second overall pick from last year out of LSU after his 2024 campaign started off on the wrong foot due to a hamstring injury early on. The 22-year-old has since rebounded, though, and is now joining fellow top outfield prospect James Wood at Rochester. Since May 1, Crews hit .292 with three home runs and 13 stolen bases. While Wood is probably closer than Crews to a big-league promotion, it's not out of the question that Crews will make his major-league debut in D.C. later this year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network Radio - Grant Paulsen
Share:
15 mins agoWashington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood (hamstring) is expected to start playing in games this week, according to a source. Wood has been sidelined since May 23 with right-hamstring tightness and was hitting an impressive .355 (59-for-166) with a 1.061 OPS, nine homers, 13 doubles, 31 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 45 games for Triple-A Rochester before his injury. The 21-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder is considered the No. 4 overall prospect in baseball and is likely being stashed in the majority of all fantasy leagues despite the fact that he has yet to debut in the Show. As long as he doesn't get hurt again, Wood figures to earn his first big-league promotion at some point early in the second half of the season. In addition to his strong hitting line at Rochester this year, Wood also has a robust 17.4 percent walk rate in his 202 plate appearances.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Washington Post - Andrew Golden

20 mins agoLos Angeles Angels right-hander Jose Soriano (abdomen) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers due to abdominal pain. Right-hander Zach Plesac will now make the emergency spot start. We don't currently know the severity of Soriano's injury or whether he'll only miss just one turn through the Angels' rotation. The 25-year-old is now a candidate to land on the injured list if it's serious enough. The hard-throwing Dominican pitcher has been much better in his last two starts, giving up only four runs (three earned) while walking three and fanning six in 14 innings against the Padres and Diamondbacks to lower his season ERA to 3.48. This will be Plesac's first big-league start in 2024 after recording a 5.42 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 51 K's in 74 2/3 innings in 13 starts for Triple-A Salt Lake. Plesac won't be a recommended streamer on Monday.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Sam Blum

27 mins agoLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that shortstop Mookie Betts (wrist) is expected to miss six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist on a hit-by-pitch on Sunday in the series finale against the Kansas City Royals. The Dodgers officially placed Betts on the 10-day injured list on Monday and recalled outfielder Miguel Vargas from the minors in a corresponding move. If Betts heals faster than expected, there's a chance that he could be back within six weeks, but that remains to be seen. In the meantime, fantasy managers need to keep the superstar stashed in all formats. With the 31-year-old All-Star sidelined, veteran Miguel Vargas will take over starting duties at shortstop in LA. Rojas has hit a respectable .278 (30-for-108) this year, but he offers limited counting-stat upside, even in a potent Dodgers lineup.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Juan Toribio

39 mins agoMilwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras (head) is not in the starting lineup on Monday versus the hosting Los Angeles Angels. Contreras collided with Cincinnati Reds outfielder Stuart Fairchild in a play at home plate on Sunday in the 5-4 win and was checked for a concussion following the game. It's unclear if Contreras is actually dealing with a concussion, but he won't play in Monday's series opener in Anaheim and could be a candidate to land on the seven-day concussion list if he doesn't improve in the next couple of days. When healthy, the 26-year-old backstop is a must-start at the shallow catcher position in fantasy, as he's currently slashing .305/.367/.467 with an .834 OPS, nine home runs, 48 RBI and five stolen bases in 285 at-bats. Gary Sanchez is catching and batting eighth against Angels right-hander Jose Soriano on Monday and will see more playing time if Contreras misses more time.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Milwaukee Brewers
Share:
44 mins agoNew York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo (arm) suffered a fracture to the radial neck of his right arm on Sunday against the division-rival Boston Red Sox but will not need surgery, according to a person with knowledge of the injury. Still, Rizzo could miss anywhere from four to six weeks. It's unclear what the Yankees will do with Rizzo on the shelf, but it seems likely that they will move third baseman DJ LeMahieu to first base and give utility man Oswaldo Cabrera most of the playing time at third base. The injury occurred when Rizzo collided with Boston reliever Brennan Berardino while running down the line to beat out a ground ball. The 34-year-old three-time All-Star has mostly struggled at the plate this year for the Bombers, hitting only .223 (59-for-264) with eight homers and 28 RBI. Cabrera will be a popular waiver-wire pickup in deeper fantasy leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Ken Rosenthal, Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner

51 mins agoColorado Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers (hamstring) was out at Coors Field on Monday doing a full day of baseball activities before the series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies are still deciding if Rodgers will go on a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque before he is reinstated from the injured list. Once he returns from the IL, rookie infielder Adael Amador is likely to head back to Double-A Hartford to continue his development. The 27-year-old Rodgers is eligible to come off the 10-day IL on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen if that will happen. Either way, he's close to rejoining Colorado as their everyday second baseman. The former first-rounder is having one of his better seasons in the big leagues to this point with a .275 average, three home runs, 22 RBI and 24 runs scored in 59 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: DNVR Sports - Patrick Lyons
Share:
58 mins agoColorado Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle (knee) is starting in center field and is batting leadoff for the Rockies on Monday for the series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander James Paxton. Left-patellar tendonitis kept Doyle out the last two games, but he's feeling better now and is ready to roll to start the new week. The 26-year-old should be returned to starting fantasy lineups against a vulnerable left-hander while batting out of the leadoff spot. Doyle is hitting .268 (64-for-239) with five homers, 19 RBI and 18 stolen bases in his 67 games in 2024 after hitting just .203 with 10 homers and 22 steals in 126 games in his first year in the big leagues in 2023. Doyle has yet to homer against a southpaw this year, but he's gone 14-for-51 (.275) against them and is hitting over .300 in the last two weeks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
1 hour agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) is expected to miss an extended period of time after suffering an injury during Saturday's game with Triple-A Reno. The 21-year-old underwent an MRI on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. It's not good news as it appears Lawlar has suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The current timetable for Lawlar is 4-to-6 weeks. This obviously doesn't impact the current D-Backs roster but this is a bummer considering Lawlar is one of the top prospects in the game right now.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: AZ Central
Share:
1 hour agoColorado Rockies relief pitcher Justin Lawrence (shoulder) has been activated from the 15-day injured list on Monday. The right-hander will return to the bullpen after missing three weeks of action due to a shoulder strain. The assumption is that he'll work his way back into the closer mix, but this is a situation to avoid right now. Lawrence holds a 5.91 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 21 1/3 innings of work. Possibly some time off has helped Lawrence get back on track.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Rockies PR
Share:
2 hours agoLos Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani will move up into the leadoff spot ahead of Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers will shake up their lineup and have Ohtani bat first and Will Smith bat second with Freddie Freeman in the three-hole. The move to put Ohtani in the leadoff spot appears to be a good one. He's coming off a two home run performance and is one of the best hitters in the game. He should get pitches to hit and has an added advantage of playing in Coors Field as well. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Ohtani in their lineups on Monday.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: mlb.com
Share:
2 hours agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jose Suarez has been designated for assignment by the organization on Monday. This doesn't come as much of a shock given how poorly Suarez has pitched this season. Most recently, Suarez gave up five runs in one inning during Sunday's outing against the San Francisco Giants. He holds a 8.15 ERA in 35 1/3 innings of work this season. In a corresponding move, right-hander Zach Plesac has been recalled to take the vacant spot on the roster. Plesac hasn't seen much success this season, so this is more of a wait-and-see type of situation.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Angels PR
Share:
2 hours agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo (wrist) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. This comes a day after Rengifo suffered a wrist contusion during Sunday's contest. Rengifo mentioned to reporters afterwards that he believes he could play on Monday. However, the Angels are taking the cautious approach and giving him the night off. In his absence, Brandon Drury will cover second base and bat sixth in his return to action.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: mlb.com
