RotoBaller PGA Expert Roundtable

2020 Tour Championship

The Expert Roundtable article is an attempt to get you inside the minds of our PGA DFS staff for every tournament.

Our four top golf writers - Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Josh Bennett, and Tommy Bell - will answer the same set of questions each week to give you an idea of how they are viewing the PGA DFS slate. Let's tee it up!

Who is your favorite DFS value play?

  • Joe Nicely: Tyrrell Hatton ($7,000) & Kevin Kisner ($6,800)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Daniel Berger ($9,100), Lanto Griffin ($5,600)
  • Josh Bennett:  Viktor Hovland (6,600)
  • Tommy Bell: Tyrell Hatton ($7,000)

Who is your favorite DFS “high priced” play?

  • Joe Nicely:  Dustin Johnson ($15,200) & Justin Thomas ($11,900)
  • Spencer Aguiar:  Justin Thomas ($11,900)
  • Josh Bennett: Justin Thomas ($11,900)
  • Tommy Bell: Justin Thomas ($11,900)

Who is your top GPP play?

  • Joe Nicely: Collin Morikawa ($10,400) & Scottie Scheffler ($7,900)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Bryson DeChambeau ($10,100) - About as boom-or-bust as can be, but DeChambeau carries upside at a reduced holding percentage.
  • Josh Bennett: Rory McIlroy (9,700)
  • Tommy Bell: Scottie Scheffler ($7,900)

Who is your top Cash-Game play?

  • Joe Nicely: Xander Schauffele ($8,900) & Tony Finau ($8,200)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Daniel Berger ($9,100)
  • Josh Bennett: Xander Schauffele (8,900)
  • Tommy Bell: Xander Schauffele (8,900)

Which popular golfer will you be “fading”?

  • Joe Nicely:  Jon Rahm ($12,700)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Billy Horschel ($5,700), Tony Finau ($8,200)
  • Josh Bennett: Daniel Berger (9,100)
  • Tommy Bell: Jon Rahm ($12,700)

What stands out as the most important stat for this golf course?

  • Joe Nicely:  SG: Approach, Ball Striking, Par-4 Scoring (450-500yds)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Strokes Gained Approach, Ball Striking, Par-Five Scoring
  • Josh Bennett:  SG: Approach
  • Tommy Bell: Par 5 scoring, SG: Tee to Green

Who is your favorite DFS “dart throw”?

  • Joe Nicely: Billy Horschel ($5,700), Ryan Palmer ($5,400)
  • Spencer Aguiar: Cameron Smith ($5,100) - Even if Cameron Smith is not grading out overly well for me, his upside makes him an intriguing target for those looking to locate a cheap, volatile option.
  • Josh Bennett: Billy Horschel (5,700)
  • Tommy Bell: Ryan Palmer ($5,400)

What is your favorite bet of the week? (Any type)

  • Joe Nicely: DJ (-120) vs Rahm
  • Spencer Aguiar:  Justin Thomas (6/1) to win Tour Championship
  • Josh Bennett:  Justin Thomas (6/1) to win Tour Championship
  • Tommy Bell:   Justin Thomas (6/1) to win Tour Championship

Make a “bold prediction” for this week:

  • Joe Nicely: Rory WDs
  • Spencer Aguiar: Dustin Johnson falls out of the top-three finishers.
  • Josh Bennett: A player at -3 or worse to start wins the tournament
  • Tommy Bell: Rory McIlroy falls out of the Top 20 following brutal Friday/Saturday rounds

Who is your favorite overall DFS golfer and why?

  • Joe Nicely: Justin Thomas ($11,900) - Offers great win equity at a discounted price from DJ & Rahm
  • Spencer Aguiar: Daniel Berger ($9,100) - Most upside potential to go along with a reasonable price tag. Minus-four might be too far back to win, but I expect Berger to outperform his ninth-place projection on DraftKings, making him someone worth adding alongside your high-end choices.
  • Josh Bennett: Xander Schauffele (8,900) - He's a scorer and is capable of putting multiple low rounds on the board especially in a no-cut event. He's one of the few that are 7 or more strokes back that has the potential to make a run and win still.
  • Tommy Bell: Justin Thomas ($11,900) - I think this is your only reasonable bet to win the tournament IF DJ and Rahm play well. Otherwise, we’ll need an implosion at the top.

What is your optimal DFS lineup building strategy?

  • Joe Nicely: Stars & Scrubs
  • Spencer Aguiar: Stars-and-Scrubs. I believe it is vital to grab as many top choices as possible.
  • Josh Bennett: Balanced
  • Tommy Bell: Stars and Scrubs

Who is your pick to win the tournament?

  • Joe Nicely: Dustin Johnson
  • Spencer Aguiar: Justin Thomas
  • Josh Bennett: Justin Thomas
  • Tommy Bell: Justin Thomas
