Defensive back Charles Woodson had previously announced that 2015-16 would be his last season playing pro football. Woodson, now 39, has had quite the amazing career.

Starting with his time at the University of Michigan, Woodson won the Heisman Trophy in 1997 while helping the Wolverines win a national title in that same season. It's also worth noting that Woodson played both offense and defense in college. He's also the last player to have won the Heisman while not being a running back or quarterback. As we've seen with athletes like Tim Tebow, sometimes that is just as good as it gets. Not Woodson though.

Entering the league in 1998, Woodson was voted the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year to kick off one of the great NFL careers for a defensive player. He is tied (with Rod Woodson and Darren Sharper) for the all time most defensive touchdowns with 13 and is second all time in interceptions returned for touchdowns (11).

In 2002, Woodson was part of the "Tuck Rule" game against the New England Patriots. Woodson appeared to have sacked Tom Brady and forced a fumble that would have sealed an AFC Title Game berth for the Oakland Raiders. The officials would overturn the call though, and you all know the rest.

While injuries led to Woodson's first tenure in Oakland ending unceremoniously, he found a second life with the Green Bay Packers. His time in Wisconsin included a Super Bowl title and multiple Pro-Bowl appearances along with a change from cornerback to safety. Woodson actually had more interceptions (28) in his first four seasons in Green Bay than he did in the previous eight seasons (17) with the Raiders.

Woodson was a team first player, who played wherever he was needed on defense. He's played on the outside, both safety positions, and as nickel. Versatility marked Woodson's 18-year career as he was able to rush the passer, tackle ball-carriers, and defend the pass.

Despite not reaching the playoffs in his final season, in his second go-around with the Raiders, Woodson did give himself a nice little sendoff gift. He had never been able to intercept a Peyton Manning in his career, and in Week 5 he finally did...twice.

Congrats on a Hall of Fame career, Charles. Off to Canton!
