ANALYSIS: Greg Bird will be shut down for the next week or so with no baseball activities. Bird had his second MRI of the season on his ankle. The first showed a bone bruise that the team hoped would heal. Today's test proved it has not. The first baseman will not be traveling to Chicago, and time away from the game may help him rest both physically and mentally.
After posting strong numbers in spring training, Bird is hitting on a .100 season average with two hits and nine strikeouts over his past 10 games. Bird had 16 extra-base hits this Spring, including eight home runs, and had a minor league slash of .282/.395/.483.
