Recent Fantasy Football Quarterback News
Justin Fields, New York Jets
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract during the offseason. The signal-caller has had his share of ups and downs throughout his career thus far. However, Jets general manager Darren Mougey appears to have confidence in the 2021 No. 11 overall pick. "I do believe Justin can be one of those guys," said Mougey during a recent interview. "I've seen progress during this camp and look forward to seeing the progress throughout the season as they all come together."
Fields spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears before suiting up for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024. In 50 regular-season contests, he's thrown for 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 31 picks while completing only 61.1% of his attempts. Although his accuracy hasn't been the best, he's at least made up for it by finding the end zone 19 times on the run. With that said, Fields should be considered a starting fantasy option in two-QB formats. On the other hand, he has a way to go before earning a routine spot in 12-team fantasy lineups, especially since it may take him time to get acclimated to his new squad.
Cameron Ward, Tennessee Titans
The Athletic's Jeff Howe writes that the Tennessee Titans "have been thrilled" with rookie first-round quarterback Cameron Ward's work ethic early on. Ward has shown up around 5 am every day during training camp to start his workout and is frequently bringing other players with him. That leadership is an important quality, although it doesn't mean that Ward isn't going to be a stud right away in his first NFL season. The 23-year-old is going to start right away for the Titans after they took him first overall in April's draft.
Fantasy managers should expect a steep learning curve in an offense with Calvin Ridley as the WR1 and not much else behind him. Ward has "come as advertised," but the ups and downs he showed in the preseason are likely to continue into a very difficult Week 1 matchup on the road against a Denver Broncos defense that should be one of the best in the league again in 2025.
Bo Nix, Denver Broncos
League evaluators see "a lot of room for improvement" in Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and "believe he's capable of raising his game," per Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Nix outperformed expectations as a rookie in 2024, throwing for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns in 17 games. He also showed an ability to make plays with his legs, rushing for 430 yards and four scores on 92 attempts. Nix finished the season on a tear, throwing for 19 touchdowns and completing 70.3% of his passes over his final eight regular-season games.
He'll be expected to be more consistent from start to finish in his second season under center for the Broncos. Nix profiles as a low-end fantasy QB1 who is helped by his dual-threat ability and the significant talent around him in Denver.
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is expected to make more pre-snap reads in new head coach and play caller Liam Coen's offense, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Howe writes that Lawrence will be sent to the line with two play calls "90% of the time," and that a "trusted QB expert believed Lawrence could turn it on in the second half of the season when he becomes more comfortable." As the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024, Coen engineered the best season of quarterback Baker Mayfield's career.
A similar breakout could be possible for Lawrence, who is coming off an injury-shortened campaign that saw him average the lowest amount of passing yards per game of his career. The 25-year-old profiles as a mid-tier fantasy QB2 with upside.
C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Houston Texans have been "encouraged with the new group that is charged with protecting quarterback C.J. Stroud." Houston traded left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders during the offseason. Fortunately, Aireontae Ersery has gotten off to a strong start to pace" the team's revamped protection unit. Houston's offensive line was among the worst in the National Football League in 2024. While the latest update from Howe is encouraging, things must change drastically, or Stroud could continue to suffer.
The signal-caller took a step back in his sophomore campaign, finishing by throwing for 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 picks. He also failed to find the end zone on the run after doing so three times in 2023. With that said, wide receiver Tank Dell (knee) isn't expected back anytime soon, and Stefon Diggs is now a New England Patriot. As a result, Stroud may not be the safest fantasy quarterback compared to some, although he is still worth starting in most formats, assuming his production doesn't decrease even more moving forward.
Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland Browns
NFL.com's Bucky Brooks believes that Cleveland Browns rookie fifth-round quarterback Shedeur Sanders could make an impact in his first year in the league. Sanders had a poor showing in the team's preseason finale, but he also showed flashes that suggest he "has the talent and potential to develop into an effective NFL quarterback in a traditional pro-style system." Brooks adds that Sanders showed "impressive touch, timing, and accuracy when playing with the No. 1 unit in the preseason opener."
The fact that the Browns traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders shows that the Browns saw enough out of Sanders and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel to make them the direct backup plans if veteran Joe Flacco doesn't work out as the starter. Cleveland's season would have to go south quickly for Sanders to see extensive playing time, but it wouldn't be the first time that has happened to a Browns team.
