NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 1/9/24

We have finally made it! The 2023-2024 season is just about halfway done as the holiday season closes. There have been some surprises, both good and bad, and generational talent Connor Bedard has not disappointed. With teams still in flux and many unwritten stories yet to take fold, the race to the Stanley Cup is heating up!

Tonight we have a ten-game slate and two teams playing on a back-to-back: Vancouver and Boston. The currently live top-three highest implied team totals are: Edmonton with 4.6, Toronto with 4.5 and Winnipeg with 4.0. I will do my best to guide you through this ten-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

DISCLOSURE: Make sure to monitor the NHL news feeds for the latest player status and injury news.

DraftKings and FanDuel Goalies - NHL DFS Picks

Joonas Korpisalo - DK $7.4K || FD $6.7K

Opponent - Calgary Flames

With few ‘safe’ favorites on the slate tonight at the goalie position, it could be more optimal to target the lower-end salaries in hopes of hitting the 35 or more Save Bonus on DraftKings. This leads us to Joonas Korpisalo. By no means is Korpisalo a reliable goalie and in his last five games he has a 1-3 record, 3.85 Goals Against Average and a 0.875 Save Percentage. In historical context, Korpisalo is on pace to have his second-worst season in his nine-season career. There is some positive regression coming at some point and no time is better than tonight against the Calgary Flames. Over the last 10 games, not including splits, the Flames are in the top 10 in Shots For Per 60 and in the bottom 10 in Goals For Per 60. This ultimately sets up Korpisalo for a potential floor game with the hopes of him conceding two goals or fewer.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP):

  • Craig Binnington (DK $7.3K || FD $7.6K)
  • Elvis Merzlikins (DK $7.1K || FD $7.1K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Centers - NHL DFS Picks

John Tavares - DK $7.2K || FD $8.9K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

Both Tavares and teammate Auston Matthews underperformed in San Jose at the weekend, thanks to San Jose’s Kaapo Kahkonen shutting the door to the two centers. Things may look very different in the second part of the home-and-home though. The Sharks are being outscored 34 to 44 over their last 10 away games and Tavares is due for a blowup game. In his last five, he has two goals, two assists, 17 shots, and three blocked shots.

Pius Suter - DK $3.4K || FD $4.1K

Opponent - New York Islanders

Albeit playing on the second half of a back-to-back, Suter is once again one of the top value plays and his ownership could see 15+. Bench boss Rick Tocchet has put his three heaviest hitters on a line together – Pettersson, Miller, and Bowser. This has left Suter as the second-line center, keeping his promotion from his previous third-line role. In Suter’s most recent five games, he has two goals, two assists, 14 shots, and two blocked shots. In comparison, Suter is producing similar to the aforementioned Tavares in their last five games and Suter is half the salary in a viable matchup.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Connor McDavid (DK $9.6K || FD $10.3K)
  • Max Domi (DK $3K || FD $4.5K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Wings - NHL DFS Picks

Logan Cooley - DK $3.1K || FD $4.2K

Opponent - Boston Bruins

On a large slate such as this, it is always worthwhile to have a few ‘sneaky’ plays up your sleeve and Cooley fits the narrative. The hybrid center/winger has been moved off the fourth line to the second line, but he is now a winger instead of his natural role as a center. This is in an attempt for Arizona to get more consistent production across the top nine. Playing with more skilled teammates and receiving more Time On Ice to begin with, will do wonders for Cooley. Furthermore, the second line for Arizona is their top offensive line. Barely sitting over the minimum salary on DraftKings, Cooley makes for the perfect pay-down option, whether you are stacking Arizona or looking for a one-off. Throughout his last five games, he has one assist, seven shots and four blocked shots.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - DK $5.8K || FD $7.7K

Opponent - Chicago Blackhawks

Chicago has been decimated and they are on the verge of being wiped off the face of the Earth by the Oilers tonight. The hosts lost generational talent Connor Bedard and winger Nick Foligno in their 4-2 loss to New Jersey four days ago. This leaves Chicago with little to no offensive threat and it will damper their mentality which they need going against one of the top teams in the league. On the other side of the ice, Nugent-Hopkins is expected to greatly benefit from this matchup. The winger, as mentioned on Saturday, continues to barely see a salary rise, despite his production next to center Connor McDavid. In RNH’s last five outings, he has three goals, three assists, 14 shots, and five blocked shots. In the last 10 games, excluding splits, the Oilers are the worst in High Danger Chances Per 60 and the second-worst in Shots Against, Scoring Chances Against, and Goals Against – all Per 60.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • William Nylander (DK $8.7K || FD $10.1K)
  • Denis Gurianov (DK $2.5K || FD $3K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Defensemen - NHL DFS Picks

Brandt Clarke - DK $2.8K || FD $3.5K

Opponent - Tampa Bay Lightning

Clarke may be one of the ‘sneakiest’ plays for a while – until he starts showcasing his talent. The eighth overall selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft has been recalled by the Kings from the Ontario Reign of the AHL where he has amassed seven goals and 25 assists in 30 games, courtesy of EliteProspects. For those that do not know about Clarke, he is the eventual replacement for Drew Doughty and his game is molded EXACTLY like Doughty’s in his prime. In an expected fast-paced and back-and-forth matchup in Tampa Bay, Clarke will have numerous opportunities to make value. In his NHL debut, he had one shot.

Jake Sanderson - DK $4.6K || FD $5.9K

Opponent - Calgary Flames

This may very well be the last time Sanderson makes the article. Time and time again, the defenseman continues to underperform whenever he is highlighted and he has cooled off since his hot start to the season. The defenseman has two assists, five shots, and 10 blocked shots over his last five performances. Against the shoot-happy Calgary Flames, Sanderson has the chance to make value from blocked shots alone.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Alexander Romanov (DK $4K || FD $4.7K)
  • Juuso Valimaki (DK $2.7K || FD $3.6K)
