Justin's NCAA college football top Heisman Trophy contenders after Week 9 of the 2023 season. Top candidates include J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.
No trophy in college sports means as much as the Heisman Trophy, which recognizes the best player in college football. That's why each week I'll be taking stock of the top five contenders for the trophy.
With Caleb Williams almost entirely out of contention at this point, we're bound to have a new winner of the award this year. Will it be Washington's Michael Penix Jr., or will another player make a run?
Below are the top five Heisman contenders after Week 9 of the college football season. These are the five players who I view as having the best shot to win the trophy based on their performances this season.

5. Jordan Travis - QB, Florida State
Jordan Travis is coming off an impressive win over Wake Forest, throwing for 359 yards and three touchdowns in the 41-16 win. He's now thrown for 2,109 yards with 18 touchdowns and two interceptions this season for the Seminoles.
4. Bo Nix - QB, Oregon
Oregon blew out Utah 35-6 this weekend. Bo Nix was 24-for-31 for 248 yards and two touchdowns and also added a rushing score. He's completed 78.3% of his pass attempts this season with 21 touchdowns. Nix has only been intercepted once. He's also scored three rushing touchdowns.
3. Jayden Daniels - QB, LSU
LSU was off this past weekend. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has completed 73.1% of his passes for 2,573 yards and 25 touchdowns. He leads the FBS in passing touchdowns and sits fourth in passing yards. He's also added 521 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.
2. J.J. McCarthy - QB, Michigan
Michigan was off this past weekend. J.J. McCarthy has completed 78.1% of his pass attempts this season for 1,799 yards and 18 touchdowns. He's been picked off just three times and has three rushing touchdowns.
1. Michael Penix Jr. - QB, Washington
The Huskies remain undefeated after their 42-33 over Stanford. Michael Penix Jr. was 21-for-37 for 369 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. He now has 24 touchdown passes this season and has completed 69% of his pass attempts. The only mark against him—after four straight seasons with multiple rushing scores, Penix has zero this year.
