Kyle Whittingham Stepping Down as Utah Head Coach
Longtime Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham is stepping down from the program, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. He will, however, coach the Utes against Nebraska on December 31 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Whittingham has led the Utah program since 2005, making him the second-longest active tenured head coach at one school, behind only Iowa's Kirk Ferentz (1999). The 66-year-old has tallied an impressive 177-88 record in Salt Lake City, and his resume includes three conference championships and 11 bowl-game victories. Whittingham has won at least 10 games eight times, including three of the last five seasons. This has been one of the wildest coaching carousels of all time, and yet another big job is set to open. UPDATE: Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, who has been on Utah's staff since 2007, is expected to be promoted to head coach.
