Chicago Cubs outfielder Cole Roederer (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday on his throwing arm, according to a source. Because he's a position player and not a pitcher, Roederer is expected to be ready for Opening Day next season. The team's No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, will finish the 2021 with an underwhelming .229/.345/.300 slash line with no home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases in five attempts in 20 games for High-A South Bend. The 21-year-old drew comparisons to Andrew Benintendi coming out of high school for his smooth left-handed swing, but he needs to develop more of a gap-to-gap approach in order to become more of a complete hitter.
