New York Mets outfielder Jay Bruce is sitting out the team’s opening game of their series against the Washington Nationals on Monday due to plantar fasciitis, but he’ll be available to pinch-hit if needed. This lines up with our expectations after Bruce said he should play on Tuesday. There shouldn’t be much long-term worry here, although he may need to miss time here and there as this issue did affect him throughout spring training as well. Bruce is off to a slow start this year, and his contact quality may have something to do with it. His hard hit rate is a putrid 22.9%, which would be a career-worst by miles; that will obviously need to turn around if he’s going to replicate his successful 2017.--John Smith
