Week 4 Dynasty Mailbag

Up is down, down is up, white is black and black is white. That’s how a lot of fantasy football owners are feeling after Week 3. Luckily for those that play dynasty, they realize they are in it for the long haul and are only getting shortness of breath each week instead of living and dying by each bounce of the ball.

Fantasy owners of Jay Ajayi, Kelvin Benjamin and Cam Newton were all disappointed in their individual results in Week 3. However, those players’ dynasty values may or may not have been affected due to a poor performance for just one week. If that player’s value changes there can be opportunities to either buy or sell or cut a player depending on how drastically that value changes.

This week we will take a look at some questions from the dynasty community regarding a variety of topics including find the current trade values for Allen Robinson and Buck Allen and if LeGarrette Blount still deserves a spot on dynasty rosters. If you would like to be included in next week’s mailbag, please email [email protected] . Let’s get to the questions.

Dynasty Mailbag Questions

What is Allen Robinson’s current dynasty value in picks in 10-team non-PPR?

This certainly is an interesting question as there is so much up in the air with the entire Jacksonville offense next season. The first question is if the Jags will re-sign Robinson to a long-term contract extension. Most would think that is all but certain, however, until the ink has dried dynasty owners need to wait and see. There not only is the uncertainty about which team Robinson will potentially be playing for in 2018, but also how he recovers from his ACL injury and subsequent surgery.  The good news for Robinson owners is that the injury did occur early enough in the season for Robinson to likely start 2018 back in the opening day lineup.

When it comes to valuing Robinson in a shallower league like a 10 teamer, owners are looking for difference makers at each and every position. The good news is that we’ve seen Robinson’s ceiling and it is near the top of the league when it comes to fantasy output. There have only been four players over last three seasons to score 14 or more touchdowns in a year and Robinson in that elite club (the others are Jordy Nelson, Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall for those playing at home). Due to that really high ceiling, it would not be out of the question to ask for a top-4 rookie pick in 2018 along with a 3rdand/or 4th round pick as well. Robinson is only 24 years old so dynasty owners have to think they will be able to get at least 7-9 strong years out of him in the future.

12-team standard league: Alshon Jeffrey for Allen Robinson and a late 2018 1st Rounder. Which side wins and why?

Unfortunately the rest of this owner’s roster was not provided, but we have to think they are a contender if the 2018 first-round pick is going to be a late one. If this team is looking to contender this season, they have to pull out all of the stops to secure talent that can help them win now. That being said, adding Alshon Jeffery, who is an every week WR2 at worst, is well worth the investment. He can bring stability to a wide receiver corps that is missing a large piece after the season ending injury to Allen Robinson. Jeffery is currently number two in among NFL receivers in Air Yards according to airyards.com which measures the amount of yards passes to a certain player have traveled in the air. Jeffery is not only seeing high-leverage and deeper targets, but also is seeing 24% market share of the Eagles pass attempts this season which is tied for 18th in the NFL. Even though Jeffery is on a one-year, prove-it type of deal, the owner acquiring Jeffery made a smart decision.

What is Buck Allen’s rookie-pick value in a .5 PPR league?

There was a reason why the Ravens signed free agent Danny Woodhead prior to the start of the 2017 season - they knew Buck Allen was only a replacement level player. While Allen does so capable hands out of the backfield, he does not have the power in his running style to be an every-down back in the NFL. It’s great to see his involvement in the passing game, catching 5 of 6 passes in each of his last two games, but his overall outlook in the future is not shining brightly.  Any owner that could receive a 2nd round rookie draft pick in 2018 rookie drafts should be happy to send Allen packing. He may even lose some of his value this season IF, and it’s a big IF, Danny Woodhead returns from his hamstring injury. Dynasty owners should strike while the iron is hot and sell Allen before he is relegated back to the bench, not only for the Ravens, but for dynasty teams.

Who would you cut for Ryan Griffin in a 12-team PPR? Current TEs are Reed, Clay, Brate, and Vernon Davis. Options are Corey Clement, Cameron Brate or not to add Griffin.

Ryan Griffin appears to the be the heir-apparent to the injured CJ Fiedorowicz in Houston and after a six target day in Week 3, Griffin can be a solid pickup for TE needy teams. However, looking at the roster of tight ends this owner has, he doesn’t need to pick up Griffin. All three of their healthy tight ends, Clay, Brate and Vernon Davis are potentially top-12 scorers at the position this week, playing against defenses that have struggled against to start the season. Both Clay and Brate are intriguing options this weekend especially, playing in a high total game (Clay) and against a defense that has already surrendered three touchdowns to tight ends in 2017 (Brate). Griffin can be kept safely on the waiver wire for this team with tons of depth at the position.

Is LeGarrette Blount droppable in 20-man roster PPR dynasty format?

Looking back at last week’s mailbag, it’s hard to outright drop a player in dynasty formats. It only takes one owner to offer you something, even if it’s a late round rookie pick to take a player off your hands. If there are no takers at all, even for that late rookie pick, then yes, drop LeGarrette Blount. Blount is at least in a three way time share going forward in the Eagles backfield with Wendell Smallwood and rookie Corey Clement, and especially in PPR leagues, Blount will not have the touchdown upside of a season ago to when he was in New England. He did catch a touchdown pass this year on the goal-line in Week 1, but that will not be the norm going forward. Especially in league with smaller rosters like 18 or 20 players, Blount can safely be removed from yours.
