Truist Championship - Course/Tournament History

Quail Hollow Club was founded in 1959 and officially opened for play in 1961. The course was originally designed by George Cobb, with early input from Arnold Palmer. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations, most notably a significant redesign led by Tom Fazio, who modernized the layout while preserving its original character.

Quail Hollow has developed into one of the premier venues in professional golf. It has served as the primary host of the Truist Championship since 2003 and has also hosted major events, including the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2025, along with the Presidents Cup in 2022.

The Truist Championship, formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship, was first established in 2003 and has been a staple on the PGA Tour schedule ever since. Traditionally held in the spring, the event has primarily been contested at Quail Hollow Club, which has served as its home for the majority of its history. Over the years, the tournament has produced a strong list of champions, including multiple-time winners like Rory McIlroy, who has enjoyed significant success at the venue.

The event has also evolved in stature, especially in recent years, becoming one of the Tour’s premier stops with elevated status and stronger fields. Quail Hollow itself has hosted several major championships, including the PGA Championship, further enhancing the prestige of this tournament. Known for its demanding closing stretch, often referred to as the “Green Mile,” the Truist Championship consistently tests every part of a player’s game and remains one of the more competitive non-major events on the schedule.

Truist Championship - Course Guide/ Scorecard

Originally designed by George Cobb in 1961, Quail Hollow Club features a par 71 layout with four par 3s, eleven par 4s, and three par 5s.

From a distance standpoint, Quail Hollow is one of the longest courses on the PGA Tour, stretching to 7,583 yards, which ranks third among the 44 courses in rotation. The fairways are relatively narrow, averaging 33.0 yards in width and ranking 17th. The greens are on the larger side, averaging approximately 6,578 square feet. Bunkers are less of a factor compared to most venues, with just 61 on the course, one of the lower totals on Tour.

Truist Championship - Notable Par 3s

The four Par 3s range between 184 yards and 249 yards. In 2024, all of the par 3s had a scoring average over par.

Hole 13 | Par 3 | 205 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 3.077 (Difficulty Rank - 11)

This long par 3 is guarded by the most severe false front on the course. Shots not reaching the putting surface can move down the fairway 20 yards short of the green. The front right of the green also features a closely mown area that can leave a player 5 feet below the surface.

The green is dramatically pitched from back to front and has one low point on the right side that collects shots and moves them off into the closely mown area.

Hole 17 | Par 3 | 190 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 3.309 (Difficulty Rank - 2)

This treacherous par 3 plays slightly downhill and features water in front and down the entire left side of the green. The bail out area to the right is closely mown and leaves an uphill pitch shot to a green sloping away from the player running towards the water.

The green has a central ridge splitting the green into front and back sections. The rear section pitches towards the back of the green, forcing a precise tee shot to hold the putting surface.

Truist Championship - Notable Par 4s

There are eleven Par 4s at Quail Hollow Club, with the majority of those holes ranging between 450 and 500 yards. No. 8 is the shortest, listed at 346 yards, with the longest being No. 9, playing 530 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest par 4 on the course last year was the 18th hole.

Hole 16 | Par 4 | 529 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.283 (Difficulty Rank - 3)

This demanding tee shot favors a left-to-right ball flight, and the fairway is guarded with 1 bunker down the right side and a steep hill leading to water down the left. The second shot plays downhill to a large peninsula green with a bunker on the right side and water on the left and long.

Hole 18 | Par 4 | 494 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.50 (Difficulty Rank - 1)

This par 4 is one of the most difficult on the course. The tee shot plays downhill and has a bunker on the right side. A creek runs down the left side of the fairway all the way to the green. The second shot plays slightly uphill, and the green is guarded by two right bunkers and the creek on the left.

The green features a false front and a central ridge dividing the green into two sections.

Truist Championship - Notable Par 5s

There are three Par 5s on the course: No. 7, No. 10, and No. 15. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2024. Hole No. 7 was the easiest hole on the course two years ago, with a scoring average of 0.441 below par.

Hole 7 | Par 5 | 546 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.559 (Difficulty Rank - 18)

This is the shortest par 5 on the course and presents players with a wonderful opportunity for scoring. It is a tight driving hole, and tee shots must navigate bunkers on the left, plus a creek that runs down the entire right side. The sloped green is tucked behind water and is surrounded by bunkers, making this hole the epitome of a risk-reward par 5.

Hole 15 | Par 5 | 577 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.585 (Difficulty Rank - 17)

This par 5 is open off the tee but favors a right-to-left flight down the left side. The second shot plays uphill, and the fairway is protected with a bunker down the left side in the layup zone. The green is pitched back to front and has a spine bisecting the front section, making a front left and a front right section. The front of the green features a large bunker in the center and closely mown areas to the right and front left.

Featured/ Signature Hole(s): 16-18 (“Green Mile”)
