After losing starting running back James Conner for the year, the Arizona Cardinals needed someone to step up. Trey Benson looked to be that guy, and fantasy managers who stashed him were feeling pretty good about rostering him.
Unfortunately, Benson couldn't break out, stalling his Year 2 season after suffering a knee injury that required surgery. He's now missed three straight contests after landing on injured reserve following Week 4's matchup with the Seahawks.
With Arizona standing at 2-5 and the run game struggling, fantasy managers want to know when Benson will return. And will he actually help their teams when he's back? Let's take a look at his situation.

Trey Benson Injury Update
The 23-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his meniscus earlier this season, sidelining him for at least four games due to IR requirements. His recovery timeline was initially estimated at four to six weeks, making Week 10 the earliest he can return. The Cardinals had a bye in Week 8, an additional week for the RB to recover.
Benson won't be available to play in Week 9's Monday Night Football battle with the Cowboys, but Week 10 against the Seahawks would be a realistic target if his recovery stays on track. Arizona hasn't shared any progress, good or bad, so his status is worth monitoring as practice reports roll in next week.

The Cardinals' backfield has been in shambles since Conner went down. They've relied on a combination of Bam Knight, Emari Demercado, and Michael Carter. None of those running backs has made much of an impact. Carter was recently released (and re-signed to the practice squad), which might signal optimism that Benson will return soon.
Arizona's rushing attack has been one of the least productive squads in the NFL, with quarterback Kyler Murray leading the team in rushing yards. That tells you just how much the team needs Benson back.
Before his injury, Benson tallied 160 yards on 29 carries with a long run of 52 yards, averaging an impressive 5.5 yards per carry. He has yet to find the end zone, but looks to get that back on track in his return. For a team that has struggled with consistency on the ground, Benson's presence will be welcomed.
Trey Benson Fantasy Football Outlook
If you've been hanging onto Benson in an IR slot, the patience may finally pay off soon. The Cardinals' decision to move on from Carter strongly hints at Benson's upcoming return. Once healthy, he should slot back in as the team's lead back, especially since none of the active backs have been impressive.
Expectations will need to be realistic with the RB. Arizona might decide to ease him into action to avoid further setbacks, especially since meniscus injuries can linger. If he can recapture the efficiency he's had in the past, he has major flex appeal in fantasy. Once he gets more comfortable, Benson could have RB2 upside.

For those desperate for running back depth, you should check your waivers. In shallower leagues, managers may have dropped Benson due to his time on IR. If that's the case, get him before your leaguemates catch on. Even if he doesn't get a full workload in his first game back, he could be a game-changer for the playoff push.
Benson won't play in Week 9's contest, but he's one of the more interesting names to monitor for Week 10. Arizona is looking for answers on offense, and the former third-round pick should add a boost. If you have room on your bench (and he's out there on waivers), stash him now before his fantasy stock rises.
