Starling Marte Should Rejoin Mets This Week
Starling Marte (knee) should come off the 10-day injured list and rejoin the team this week, per manager Carlos Mendoza. Marte still needs another couple of days, but he most likely will not require a minor-league rehab assignment before returning. Barring a setback for the 36-year-old veteran over the next couple of days, he could rejoin the Mets before Friday's series opener in San Francisco against the Giants. Jesse Winker (back) is also on the IL, but when Marte returns, he might be relegated to the short side of a platoon at designated hitter against left-handed pitching for New York. The Dominican outfielder may no longer be an everyday player at this stage of his career, even though he was hitting .270 (44-for-163) before his knee bruise. Marte has only four homers and rarely runs these days (five steals), either.
