ANALYSIS: Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz is set to make his 2024 major league debut on Friday, July 5, against the Texas Rangers. Baz underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and faced a few setbacks this season, which delayed his return this summer.
With the recent trade that sent Aaron Civale to Milwaukee, Baz now has clear control over the fifth spot in the Rays' rotation, making him a must-roster player going forward.

In his previous five starts at Triple-A Durham, Baz showcased elite strikeout potential with 35 punchouts in just 23 innings. He held a stellar 1.57 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.
In his brief 40-inning sample size in the major leagues in 2021 and 2022, the former first-round pick struck out 48 batters, suggesting his elite swing-and-miss potential can be just as dominant in the big leagues.
