Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Jazz Chisholm Jr. Being Placed On The Injured List
Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been placed on the 10-day injured list, per a tweet from the team’s official Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon. Per the tweet, Chisholm’s placement on the injured list is due to turf toe.
According to a tweet from The Miami Herald’s Craig Mish on Tuesday, Chisholm will reportedly “miss approximately 4-6 weeks.”
The 25-year-old was off to a solid start for the Marlins and fantasy managers alike, hitting .229 with a .291 on-base percentage, seven home runs, and 14 stolen bases in 159 plate appearances.
Chisholm has seen the bulk of Miami’s starts in center field this year, with 319.2 defensive innings at the position as of the beginning of play on Tuesday. Bryan De La Cruz, Peyton Burdick, and Garrett Hampson are the only other Marlins players to see action in center field this season and the trio has combined for just 47.1 innings at the position.
Prospect Xavier Edwards, who was recalled as part of the series of transactions that saw Chisholm be placed on the injured list, has some experience in the outfield and could see some playing time there.
Though if anything, the move further cements Bryan De La Cruz’s starting role moving forward with fellow outfielders Jesus Sanchez and Avisail Garcia also on the injured list. De La Cruz has hit .280 with a .319 on-base percentage, three home runs, and a stolen base so far in 141 plate appearances.
Hampson, who started in center field on Tuesday and hit leadoff, could also stand to benefit fantasy-wise. The versatile 28-year-old is batting .262 with a .294 on-base percentage, a home run, and two stolen bases in 69 plate appearances this season, though he’s stolen at least 12 bases in each of the three seasons in which he’s logged 200 or more plate appearances. He’s certainly someone to keep an eye on in deeper fantasy leagues if he can carve out a regular role.
Fantasy Baseball Impact Of Cole Irvin Being Recalled From The Minors
Baltimore Orioles left-handed pitcher Cole Irvin is back in the Majors with the club after being recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday per a tweet from the American League East franchise’s official Twitter account:
An offseason acquisition by the O’s, Irvin previously made three starts with the club before being optioned to the minors, giving up 17 hits, 15 earned runs, eight walks, and a pair of home runs in 12.2 innings while striking out 13 batters.
The former Oakland Athletics starter made five starts for Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate, finding more success there with a 3.19 ERA and a 4.12 FIP in 31 innings of work. However, he struck out just 17 batters in those 31 innings.
Now, reportedly per a tweet from The Baltimore Sun’s Nathan Ruiz, Irvin will pitch in long relief.
The move to the bullpen, especially considering it won’t include high-leverage or late-inning work, makes it difficult to roster Irvin in any fantasy format at the moment.
And while he could possibly step back into the rotation at some point – after all, per Ruiz’s tweet, the Orioles reportedly see Irvin as a starting pitcher – the left-hander’s low strikeout rate would limit him to deeper leagues in that hypothetical scenario.
