The San Diego Padres signed right-hander Yovanny Cruz to a minor-league deal this week. Cruz spent the last five years in the minors with the Chicago Cubs but elected to become a free agent earlier this month. The 24-year-old has never pitched beyond High-A ball and has posted a 3.46 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 59 walks and 181 strikeouts in 163 2/3 innings over 59 appearances (30 starts) in the last five seasons. In 2023, he had a strong 1.71 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 11 walks and 24 strikeouts in just 21 innings over 16 relief outings in the Arizona Complex League and at High-A South Bend. Cruz will simply be minor-league pitching depth for the Friars in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerRead More News
