Trevor Williams Agrees With Cubs
4 years agoThe Chicago Cubs agreed to a one-year deal believed to be worth around $2.5 million with free-agent starting pitcher Trevor Williams on Saturday. Williams will attempt to win a rotation job in Chicago, with Kyle Hendricks, Zach Davies, Adbert Alzolay and Alec Mills likely lined up to take four spots. The right-hander could be competing with the likes of Kohl Stewart and Shelby Miller in spring training. Williams became a free agent last November when he declined an outright assignment to the minors after posting a 6.18 ERA and a 19.4 strikeout percentage, which ranked in the 25th percentile, over 55 1/3 innings. He also allowed a league-high 15 home runs in 2020, something that has been a problem for Williams. The 28-year-old holds a 4.43 career ERA in 534 2/3 innings in five seasons with the Pirates. Williams will only be a low-cost NL-only arm if he wins a rotation spot with the Cubbies.
