Tomoyuki Sugano Won't Join MLB In 2021
4 years agoJapanese right-handed pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano didn't reach an agreement with a major league team on Thursday before his posting window expired, meaning he will return to Nippon Professional Baseball for the 2021 season. He'll be eligible to come to the U.S. as a free agent before the 2022 season. Sugano turned 31 years old on Oct. 11 and went 14-2 with a 1.97 ERA and three shutouts in 20 games last year for the Yomiuri Giants, striking out 131 and walking 25 in 137 1/3 innings while giving up 97 hits. In eight seasons in Japan, he is 101-49 with a 2.32 ERA. Sugano is expected to make around $8 million in yearly salary after re-signing with the Giants on a four-year deal, but he'll have opt-out clauses after each season. Whenever he does join an MLB team, he'll have some upside as a middle-of-the-rotation arm.
