Rockies Land Elehuris Montero, Tony Locey, Other Prospects
4 years agoThe Colorado Rockies received left-hander Austin Gomber, third baseman Elehuris Montero, shortstop Mateo Gil and right-handers Tony Locey and Jake Sommers in the trade that sent third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals. Montero (No. 8), Locey (19) and Gil (22) were all listed as top-30 prospects for the Cardinals by MLB Pipeline. Montero, 22, might not stick at the hot corner long term, but he makes hard contact with raw power. He'll need better plate discipline and to cut down on his whiffs if he's to have a chance at debuting in 2021. Locey, 22, must command his pitches better and repeat his delivery if he's to stick as a starter. Gil, 20, is a natural shortstop that has sneaky power and enough defensive skills to give him a solid floor as a utility player, at the very least.
