Reds Take Matt McClain At No. 17 Overall
3 years agoThe Cincinnati Reds selected UCLA shortstop Matt McLain with the 17th overall pick in the 2021 MLB amateur draft on Sunday. McClain is a really good player that has matured physically the last couple of seasons. There is a lot of power and bat-to-ball skills in his 5-foot-10 frame from the right side of the plate. McClain has a high baseball IQ and is also a plus runner with a strong arm. His athleticism makes him an option to play second base or the outfield, if needed. But scouts believe that McClain has the ability to stick at shortstop in the long run. MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds thinks he's a stronger version of Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal, and he's also been compared to former infielder Michael Young.
