5 days agoTexas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer (back, arm) threw two 20-pitch innings of live batting practice on Tuesday and is hoping the next step will be to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment. Offseason surgery on his back caused Scherzer to miss the start of the 2024 regular season, and he was pulled off his initial rehab assignment in early May while dealing with a nerve issue in his right arm. The 39-year-old three-time Cy Young winner is now facing hitters again and could start a rehab assignment soon, but there remains no timetable for him to make his season debut for the Rangers. The eight-time All-Star may not have much left in the tank at this point in his career, but he should still have a rotation spot waiting for him in Texas when the club clears him to rejoin the big-league roster. In 27 starts for the Rangers and Mets in 2023, Scherzer went 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 174:45 K:BB in 152 2/3 innings.Source: RangersToday.com - Jeff Wilson
5 days agoHouston Astros right-hander Cristian Javier (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday, according to a league source. Javier sought the opinion of renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, who recommended the reconstructive surgery that typically carries a 12- to 14-month recovery timeline. In a best-case scenario, Javier could return to Houston's rotation late next season, but there are no guarantees. It's a big blow to the Astros and fantasy managers alike after Javier posted a 3.89 ERA over his seven starts in 2024. The 27-year-old also spent time on the injured list with "neck discomfort." After returning, he allowed 11 earned runs over 11 1/3 innings and saw the velocity on his pitches plummet in his final outing on May 21. Javier signed a five-year, $64 million extension last spring but will now miss the rest of the 2024 season and most of next year.Source: The Athletic - Chandler Rome
5 days agoSan Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez (shoulder) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The 27-year-old is back after missing one game due to a minor shoulder issue. Arraez will bat leadoff and serve as the designated hitter versus lefty Patrick Sandoval on Tuesday. The stud infielder has been excellent since being traded to San Diego. Fantasy managers should make sure to get him back in their lineups on Tuesday.Source: mlb.com
5 days agoChicago Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) is set to miss significant time after landing on the injured list. The right-hander has been diagnosed with a right shoulder strain, which will stop him from throwing for the next three or four weeks. That means, Horton probably won't resume throwing until late-June or July. This is a shame considering Horton is one of the best pitching prospects in the game. Before the injury, Horton had a good chance at making the MLB this season. Now, the Cubs will probably be cautious with Horton going forward, so fans and fantasy managers might have to wait until 2025 for his big league debut.Source: Maddie Lee
5 days agoSan Francisco Giants infielder Thairo Estrada (thumb) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Estrada will make his return to the lineup following a three-game absence due to left thumb soreness. It's good to see that it wasn't too serious of an injury after Estrada jammed his thumb during Friday's game. Estrada will cover second base and bat second versus lefty Blake Walston on Tuesday.Source: San Francisco Giants
5 days agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (groin) was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Tuesday. The right-hander threw nearly 50 pitches without any issues, It's uncertain what the next step is going to be for Gray. He wasn't expected to miss much time after going on the 15-day injured list in late-May. The hope is that the 32-year-old can return within the next week.Source: Kenndi Landry
5 days agoColorado Rockies outfielder Kris Bryant (rib) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against Cincinnati Reds. The veteran slugger will miss his second straight contest due to rib soreness. Bryant suffered the injury while making a catch during the weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fantasy managers should consider Bryant as day-to-day. Jake Cave will cover left field and bat eighth versus right-hander Frankie Montas on Tuesday.Source: mlb.com
5 days agoDetroit Tigers relief pitcher Shelby Miller (elbow) has been activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers. The veteran right-hander will make his return following a three-week absence due to a nerve issue in his right elbow. The 33-year-old holds a 4.41 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 15/6 K/BB ratio across 15 games. He should return to his role of being a high leverage option out of the pen.Source: Tigers PR
5 days agoThe San Diego Padres have recently shown strong interest in Chicago White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet, according to sources briefed on the White Sox's discussions, less than three months after acquiring right-hander Dylan Cease from Chicago. The Padres have more of a need for starting pitcher after putting both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Yu Darvish (groin) on the injured list for the second time this year over the weekend, although San Diego's farm system may be thinned out so much that it doesn't hold the same appeal for the White Sox. Crochet is the team's best starter and is making $800,000 and will remain arbitration-eligible for the next two years. For Chicago to trade Crochet, they'd likely require at least one position player prospect with significant upside, and the Padres are reluctant to discuss catcher Ethan Salas and shortstop Leodalis De Vries.Source: The Athletic - Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal
5 days agoThe Houston Astros called up outfielder Trey Cabbage from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, sending down infielder Grae Kessinger. Cabbage was called up as a buffer for outfielder Kyle Tucker (shin), who was injured after fouling a ball off his shin in Monday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Tucker said X-rays showed nothing was broken, but "Right now, it's just kind of hurting." Fantasy managers are breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that Tucker will not be out long-term. Cabbage is hitting .214/.214/.286 with three RBI and two runs scored over 10 appearances with the Astros. He is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals and can be left on the waiver wire in most leagues. Source: Matt Kawahara, Houston Chronicle
5 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (hand) played catch on Tuesday and is still trending to make his next start this weekend in London against the division-rival New York Mets. "It looks good so far," manager Rob Thomson said. Suarez is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, and if he comes out of that with more thumbs up, he should be cleared to start this weekend. The 28-year-old southpaw left his last start early on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals after he was hit by a line drive on his left (pitching) hand. It's not a serious injury, though, and fantasy managers should be ready to start Suarez this weekend. The Venezuelan hurler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2024, leading the league in wins (nine), ERA (1.70), WHIP (0.79) and hits allowed per nine innings (5.2).Source: The Athletic - Matt Gelb
5 days agoNew York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Tuesday that right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) will have "at least a few" minor-league rehab starts before the team has him rejoin the big-league rotation. Cole will start his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday and is scheduled to throw 40 to 50 pitches. The 33-year-old will then need a few more starts in the minors before the Yankees will feel comfortable reinstating him from the 60-day injured list for his 2024 debut. If Cole gets through his rehab starts without any setbacks to his right elbow, he could be back for fantasy managers in late June. Cole hasn't pitched at all this year due to nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. Once he's back, the reigning American League Cy Young winner will be a must-start every time he toes the rubber.Source: The Athletic - Chris Kirschner
5 days agoArizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is retreating to the bench on Tuesday against the visiting division-rival San Francisco Giants with a left-hander on the bump. On Monday, the D-backs moved the struggling Carroll down to the eighth spot in the batting order. It's been tough going for last year's National League Rookie of the Year in 2024. The former 16th overall pick in 2019 is currently hitting .192 (43-for-224) with two homers, a league-leading four triples, six doubles, 20 RBI, nine stolen bases and 51 strikeouts in 58 games this year. Until he shows some life at the plate, the Snakes plan to hit him near the bottom of their lineup against southpaws. Since May 13 in a span of 19 games, Carroll has gone 12-for-70 (.171) with no homers, six RBI and 20 strikeouts. Randal Grichuk draws into the lineup in right field and will bat fifth on Tuesday.Source: MLB.com
5 days agoChicago White Sox first baseman Andrew Vaughn (finger) is back at first base and is hitting second for the team on Tuesday at Wrigley Field against left-hander Shota Imanaga and the Chicago Cubs. A sprained left ring finger caused Vaughn to miss all three games last weekend for the White Sox, but he's healed up now and ready to give it a go after having an extra day off on Monday. The 26-year-old hasn't really been useful to fantasy managers in mixed leagues in 2024, as he's currently hitting just .199/.264/.313 with four home runs, 11 doubles, 19 RBI, one stolen base, 14 runs scored, 15 walks and 53 strikeouts in 220 trips to the plate over 54 games in his fourth major-league season. In a poor White Sox's lineup, there's little to get excited over about Vaughn the way he's been swinging the bat.Source: Chicago White Sox
