2 hours agoNew York Mets starting pitching prospect Christian Scott tossed 3 2/3 innings of one-run ball on Thursday evening. He struck out six and allowed four hits and one free pass. The Florida product made his major-league debut earlier this season but was optioned back to Triple-A on May 31 in an attempt to manage his inning count. In 27 2/3 innings at the major-league level, Scott held his own with a 3.90 ERA, and 1.08 WHIP. However, his elite strikeout potential has yet to show in the majors as it has in the minor leagues. Nonetheless, the 55th-ranked prospect on MLB.com is worth holding onto in deeper redraft leagues, as he should rejoin the major-league roster fairly soon.Source: MiLB.com
2 hours agoChicago Cubs rookie right-hander Ben Brown (neck) has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his back, and it sounds as though he'll be out longer than his 15-day injured list stint. "We're still trying to figure out how long and what it means and what he can do. It's a unique injury for a pitcher, so we're trying to just get some more opinions," manager Craig Counsell said. With the 24-year-old now out until the second half of the season, left-hander Jordan Wicks will get some run in the Cubs' rotation and will make the start in Friday's series opener against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals. Brown has allowed a lot of hard contact in his first year in the big leagues, but he's also fanned 28.8 percent of the batters he's faced. He's gone 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 19 walks and 64 K's in 55 1/3 innings covering 15 outings (eight starts).Source: Chicago Tribune - Paul Sullivan
2 hours agoChicago Cubs rookie outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is not in the starting lineup on Friday for the series opener against the visiting division-rival St. Louis Cardinals. Crow-Armstrong will take a seat on the bench to open the weekend despite starting in each of the team's last four games. In his absence, Mike Tauchman will play center field and will hit leadoff against Cardinals right-hander Kyle Gibson. Tauchman has been a solid performer for the Cubs this year and will have some nice DFS appeal on Friday, but he's also gone hitless with one RBI in 10 career at-bats against Gibson. The 22-year-old Crow-Armstrong is a better defender than he is a hitter in just his second season in the big leagues. He's typically hitting at the bottom of Chicago's batting order and has gone just 19-for-89 (.213) with a homer, 10 RBI and nine steals in 35 games played.Source: Chicago Cubs
2 hours agoColorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Sean Sullivan continued his incredible stretch with an eight-inning gem on Thursday evening. He allowed just one earned run, four hits, no walks and struck out seven. Since allowing six earned runs on May 17, the former second-round pick has held an impressive 1.52 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and 2:30 BB:K ratio. Sullivan opened the season with High-A and held an overall 2.42 ERA and 0.87 WHIP through his first 63 ⅓ innings at this level. The southpaw could push for a Double-A debut later this summer, which could open the door for a 2025 major league debut. Dynasty managers should continue to monitor Sullivan, as he has been one of the best starting pitchers in the minor leagues through the early part of the season.Source: MiLB.com

2 hours agoThe Kansas City Royals reinstated infielder Adam Frazier from the bereavement list on Friday and optioned infielder Nick Pratto to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. After missing a few days for a personal matter, the 32-year-old veteran second baseman will return to the Royals on Friday for the start of a series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Frazier was an All-Star in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres, but he's not an everyday player with the upstart Royals and is merely hitting .225 (29-for-129) with two home runs, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored in 50 games this year. He was never much of a power hitter (career-high 13 long balls in 2023) and doesn't play enough to warrant fantasy attention outside of AL-only leagues as middle-infield depth.Source: Kansas City Royals
2 hours agoDetroit Tigers starting pitching prospect Jackson Jobe (hamstring) is set to make a rehab start with High-A West Michigan on Tuesday. Jobe was placed on the injured list on May 2 with a left hamstring strain. The top prospect in Detroit and number nine overall prospect on MLB.com looked strong through his first extended look at Double-A ball earlier this season. Through 16 ⅔ innings, the former third overall pick held a 2.16 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 10:24 BB:K ratio. He made his Double-A debut last season, where he tossed six shutout frames and allowed just four hits while striking out six. Jobe is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and should remain rostered in all dynasty formats. He could become a name to monitor in redraft leagues in the second half of the season if he performs well at Double-A over an extended period of time.Source: Evan Petzold
3 hours agoTop Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (elbow) has been assigned to the team's Florida Complex League on a minor-league rehab assignment and is scheduled to start on Friday. Tiedemann hasn't pitched in a game since April 11 due to left ulnar-nerve inflammation. The 21-year-old will eventually move up the ladder in the minors as he rehabs his left elbow, and the Blue Jays are going to take their time with their most prized prospect. When Tiedemann's rehab assignment is up, he's likely to head back to Triple-A Buffalo to continue his development before the Jays consider calling him up to the big leagues for the first time. Depending on how Tiedemann's rehab goes, there's a chance that he won't be able to make his debut in Toronto until 2025. Fantasy managers in single-year leagues shouldn't expect too much if he does debut in the second half.Source: MLB Pipeline - Sam Dykstra
3 hours agoTexas Rangers infield prospect Echedry Vargas extended his hitting streak to four games with a two-home run performance on Thursday evening. The 19-year-old has performed well in his first taste of Single-A ball with a .265/.326/.406 line with 4 long balls, 20 RBI, and nine swiped bags. Since posting a poor .158 AVG through April, the infielder has been riding a strong .288/.349/.417 since May 1. With his current play, the number 16 ranked prospect in the Texas system on MLB.com could join High-A Hickory later this summer. For now, he should remain on the waiver wire in dynasty leagues but could become a name to monitor as he progresses through the minor leagues.Source: MiLB.com
3 hours agoChicago Cubs right-hander Yency Almonte (shoulder) is throwing live batting practice in Arizona on Friday. Almonte has been sidelined since early May due to a right-shoulder strain, and Friday's live BP session will be the first time that he has faced hitters in his rehab. After a couple live sessions, Almonte should be sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment. Barring setbacks, he could be able to rejoin Chicago's major-league bullpen before the All-Star break in mid-July. The former 17th-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2012 made 17 appearances out of the Cubs' bullpen earlier this year before landing on the shelf, posting a 3.45 ERA (3.34 FIP), the third save of his career, a 1.08 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and eight walks in 15 2/3 innings pitched.Source: Watch Marquee - Andy Martinez
3 hours agoThe Chicago Cubs have tapped left-hander Jordan Wicks for the series opener on Friday against the visiting division-rival St. Louis Cardinals. Wicks returned from the injured list last week and allowed an earned run in 3 1/3 innings of relief last Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds. Although the matchup isn't a terrible one at all against the Cardinals, Wicks will be a risky fantasy streamer in deeper leagues and in DFS, mainly because of the fact that he hasn't started a game for the Cubs since April 23 before his injury. In his five starts before going on the IL, the 24-year-old southpaw had gone 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and nine strikeouts over 23 innings pitched. With Ben Brown (neck) currently sidelined, Wicks should stick around for another start beyond Friday's outing in Chicago.Source: MLB.com
3 hours agoNew York Yankees outfield prospect Everson Pereira (elbow) will undergo internal brace surgery, per Andy Martino of SNY. Pereira will undergo a similar procedure that fellow prospect Jasson Dominguez had done last fall. This unfortunate news will end Pereira's 2024 season quite early, and he should be expected to return early in the 2025 campaign as this operation requires a much shorter recovery than Tommy John surgery would need. The 23-year-old made his major league debut last season and held a .151/.233/.194 slash line and posted a .265/.346/.512 line through 40 games at Triple-A this season. MLB Pipeline ranks the outfielder as the number five prospect in the Yankee system, and he should contend for a spot on the Opening Day Roster next spring.Source: Andy Martino
3 hours agoSt. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (hand) is back at third base and is batting cleanup for the Cardinals for the series opener on Friday against the division-rival Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in a matinee affair. Arenado was hit by a pitch on Thursday, but X-rays came back negative, and he won't miss any time at all. The 33-year-old veteran wants to get right back in there with the way he's been swinging the bat lately. In the last five games, Arenado has gone 8-for-20 (.400) with two doubles and two RBI after mostly underwhelming to begin the 2024 campaign. He's slashing .260/.315/.380 overall with six homers and 31 RBI in 250 at-bats. Fantasy managers will want to get him back in their starting lineups this weekend. Arenado has never faced Cubs left-hander Jordan Wicks in his career.Source: Belleville News - Jeff Jones
5 hours agoColorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Carson Palmquist fanned five over five innings of work on Thursday for Double-A Hartford. He allowed two runs on five hits, adding to his impressive strikeout total. His 74 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings give him the highest strikeout rate in Double-A this season. The No. 14 prospect for the Rockies is (4-2) with a 3.02 ERA this year for the Yard Goats. The 6-foot-3 left-hander is not a flamethrower, but his deceptiveness often makes it challenging for hitters to make contact. The high strikeout rate is precisely what fantasy managers look for in a starting pitcher. While pitching at Coors Field makes for a scary proposition, Palmquist has the tools to be a successful big-league pitcher when he does get the opportunity.Source: MLB Pipeline
5 hours agoColorado Rockies infield/outfield prospect Sterlin Thompson crushed a three-run home run for Double-A Hartford on Thursday. Thompson hit his third long ball of the season for the Yard Goats, bringing his RBI total to 19. The 22-year-old is hitting just. 184 in June, and the three RBI are his first this month. Across two levels last year, he hit .293 with 14 homers and 56 RBI with 17 stolen bases. His consistent approach and athletic profile have helped him rise to the No. 5 overall prospect status with the Rockies. He has played all around the diamond defensively, and his position versatility could push up his major-league debut timeline. Whenever he does get the call and wherever he finds himself fitting in defensively, the bat should play, especially at Coors Field.Source: MLB Pipeline
