Grad earned his UFC contract through Dana White's Contender Series by defeating Michael Aswell via split decision and made a strong debut in his last bout with a second-round stoppage over Lucas Alexander. Usman soundly defeated Buckley by mixing up his striking with his wrestling and controlling Buckley on the ground. In 25 minutes of action, Usman landed four takedowns and 41 significant strikes.
