Padres Trying To Land Tomoyuki Sugano
4 years agoThe San Diego Padres are still working on reaching an agreement with Japanese star Tomoyuki Sugano, according to two sources. The deadline to sign Sugano to a deal is at 5 pm ET on Thursday. Even though the Padres traded for Blake Snell and Yu Darvish last week, they are still looking to add to their rotation. If Sugano doesn't agree with a major league team before the deadline, he won't be eligible to do so until next offseason. The Yomiuri Giants, his team in the Nippon Professional Baseball League, reportedly offered him a four-year deal with three opt outs on the table. The right-hander has gone 101-49 with a 2.32 ERA and 1,214 strikeouts in 1,360 innings during his eight-year career in Japan. The 31-year-old could be a nice middle-of-the-rotation piece for the Padres or any other team that acquires him.
