Lions Fire Offensive Coordinator Johnny Morton
The Detroit Lions fired offensive coordinator Johnny Morton on Tuesday, a source told Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Morton was brought in to replace Ben Johnson in 2025 after Johnson left to become the head coach of the division-rival Chicago Bears. The move to replace Morton doesn't come as a huge shock after head coach Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties late in the year to try and turn the team's season around. Before Campbell took over the offense, Detroit went 5-3 and averaged 29.9 points and 125.1 yards rushing per game. After Campbell took over, the team went 3-5 with 26.8 points per game and 114.8 yards per game on the ground. Still, the Lions' offense just wasn't consistent enough to make the postseason in one of the toughest divisions in the league. In Morton's first stint in Detroit as a senior offensive assistant in 2022, the Lions ranked fourth in total offense and fifth in scoring.
