David Montgomery 2023 Outlook: New Life in Detroit Could Yield More Goal-Line Opportunities
2 years agoAfter four years in Chicago, David Montgomery now finds himself in Detroit after signing a three-year, $18 million contract with the Lions. Reading between the lines, he'll take on the Jamaal Williams role in the offense, while rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs takes on the D'Andre Swift role. Montgomery, who was given $8.75 million guaranteed, likely takes on a higher snap share than Williams, who played on just 41.4% of the snaps a season ago. Despite playing on fewer than 50% of the snaps, Williams still managed to have the 2nd-most red zone touches of all running backs. He turned those 55 red zone touches (and league-leading 28 carries inside the 5-yard line) into 17 rushing touchdowns. Montgomery has proved capable of handling a large workload, having had at least a 65% snap share in each of the last three seasons in Chicago. He's also proven to be a capable pass-catcher, with target shares north of 11% in the last three seasons. He'll share the workload with Gibbs, but look for Montgomery to be the primary ball carrier for the Lions, especially early on. Those carries inside the 5 that Williams had a season ago should mostly go to Montgomery. Being the 5th-highest scoring offense in the league a season ago, we should project more touchdowns for Montgomery with the Lions than he scored with the Bears. Don't be afraid to make him your RB2 in 2023.
