Christian McCaffrey, Shaq Thompson Restructure Their Deals
4 years agoCarolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that running back Christian McCaffrey and outside linebacker Shaq Thompson both restructured their deals on Wednesday to give the team more salary cap space. McCaffrey converted $7,047,500 of his $8,037,500 base salary into a signing bonus, which gives the Panthers a cap savings of $5.638 million in 2021. For a player under contract for the long haul like McCaffrey, the risk is minimal with a contract restructure like this. Thompson's restructure details weren't disclosed. McCaffrey was a major fantasy bust as the consensus top overall pick in 2020 because of multiple injuries that limited him to just three games, but the 24-year-old should once again be an elite first-round selection heading into the 2021 season.
