NBA Waiver Wire: Deep League Options (Week 6)

Milos Zvekic digs up deep league waiver adds for Week 6 of fantasy basketball. Follow RotoBaller for more NBA strategy, rankings, and waiver wire advice.

If you're in too deep (a league) and you're trying to keep (a playoff spot) up above (your friends) instead of going under again, here are some deep league waiver wire options for Week 6 of the fantasy basketball season.

Below you will find some NBA players for you to consider adding to your rosters, to bolster you chances of winning it all this year. Let's get to it.

Editor's Note: New users that sign up on FantasyAces, make a $20 deposit, and enter any game will receive BOTH our full season NBA and NFL Premium Passes for free, a $119.99 value. Just email [email protected] with your new FantasyAces username - and boom, that's it! We will email you with your Premium Passes.

Deep League Add

James Johnson, SF/PF, MIA (16% owned in Yahoo! leagues)

Miami is currently plagued with injuries. Dion Waiters will be reevaluated in two weeks. Justice Winslow didn't travel with the team on their three game road trip and will not play before December 6th. Josh Richardson suffered an ankle injury and is probably also done for the road trip. That leaves  opportunities for the rest of the Heat to show what they're made of.

One of the guys who took advantage of the situation is certainly James Johnson. With Winslow out, James Johnson has been playing very well in his eight games with averages of 11.0 PTS, 1.1 3PM, 5.0 REB, 2.0 AST, 1.0 STL and 1.3 BLK on 44.9 FG% shooting in 28 minutes a game. He is at just 68.0% from the line and does lose the ball 1.9 times per game. Although, if that isn't too big an issue, the rest of his stats should be more than enough for you to give him a go.

And even if you look at his stats from the beginning of the season, the drop off before the Winslow injury is not too significant. He averaged 9.6 PTS, 1.1 3PM, 4.6 REB, 1.8 AST, 0.8 STL and 1.1 BLK with 44.8 FG%, 78.6 FT% and 1.7 TO. So he is consistent in three points, field goal shooting and was actually better in shooting free throws. He was getting just 1.4 PTS and 0.2 everything else, including turnovers, less before Winslow got injured, playing 25 minutes a game so he should hold on to his playing time and keep up the production even when Miami gets back to full health.

If well rounded multi category production from a deep league option sitting on your waiver wire is what you seek, look no more. James Johnson is your guy.

Super Deep League Add

P.J. Tucker, SG/SF, PHO (10% owned in Yahoo! leagues)

Those who read my Waiver Wire for Punting Small Stats column a couple of days ago might get a dejavu, since I wrote about P.J. Tucker there too. But he kept it going since then and deserves a place in fantasy teams who are in super deep leagues.

His season averages aren't that great with him posting 5.8 PTS, 5.7 REB, 1.0 AST, 1.1 STL, 0.2 BLK, 0.5 3PM, 0.9 TO in 24 minutes a night. His shooting is what was pulling him down considering his averages of 38.9 FG% and 75.6 FT%. He is getting more run since T.J. Warren got injured. In 31 minutes per outing over that seven games, he boosted his stats up to 9.4 PTS, 6.9 REB, 1.0 AST, 1.3 3PM while retaining the same number of turnovers in increased court time. He also improved his shooting, posting 43.8 FG% and 83.3 FT%. His defensive stats took a small hit with his steals dropping to 0.7 and him not blocking any shots in that period, but he makes up for it in his better percentages and more threes, points and rebounds.

Warren has just started light activity and shouldn't be back in the next week of two so Tucker will be getting his shot at increased minutes during that time.

Insanely Deep League Add

Wayne Ellington, SG/SF, MIA (1% owned in Yahoo! leagues)

Wayne Ellington has been turning some heads in his two games back from his injury. He was supposed to have a minutes restriction but played 58 minutes in those two games, scored nine and followed up with 22 points and averaged 3.0 3PM, 2.0 REB, 2.0 AST and just 0.5 TO on 52.2% shooting from the field. He hit 1 of 2 free throws but is 84.7% in his career so that shouldn't worry deep league owners.

Sure, Dion Waiters' injury pushed Ellington into an increased role. Sure, Josh Richardson not playing against Denver on November 30th helped Ellington get even more run. But with Miami being in the bottom three in points scored per game and in the bottom four in offensive rating, Eric Spoelstra could be looking for some changes to his minutes distribution.

Waiters won't be back for at least another two weeks, and is notorious for his poor shot selection. Josh Richardson will miss at least Miami's next two games. Ellington has earned minutes in his first two games of the season, and if he can steal the starting gig from one of the two injured players mentioned before, he could improve on his stats from his two best stints (2012-13 with the Cavaliers and 2014-15 with the Lakers) when he averaged around 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1.6 AST, 1.4 3PM, 0.8 TO and 0.6 STL on nice FT%. That is worth an add in most deep leagues.
