Michael Mayer is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup option for tight ends. Target him as a free agent add off waivers for Week 9 of the 2023 NFL season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team PPR Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 18% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Las Vegas Raiders rookie tight end Michael Mayer was a popular TE sleeper in preseason, but he wasn't able to find his footing to open the year. Through the first four games, Mayer had two targets, catching just one of those for two yards. He was droppable in all formats at that point.
But maybe it was just that rookie tight ends take some time to get going? Because Mayer has played much better over the past three games. After two total targets in the first four games, he has 13 targets over the past three.
Last week against the Bears, his production was down a bit, as Mayer caught two of his four targets for 13 yards. It was a disappointment after his performance the week prior, when he had five catches for 75 yards.
The Raiders had a bye this week. Sometimes, bye weeks can be a good time to install some additional plays for a promising player. Could we see heavier involvement for Mayer going forward?
It's worth noting that after playing 51% of snaps or fewer in the first four games, Mayer has snap rates of 66%, 81%, and 71% over the last three games. His involvement is rising, and he's worth an add in 14-team leagues just in case the Raiders have bigger plans for the Notre Dame product after the bye week. Maybe you'll wind up sending him back to the waiver wire for the second time this season, but the risk is worth taking.
