BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 41% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Finding Chase Claypool in any waiver pool would have been ridiculous just a year ago considering his top-24 2020 season. Claypool, of course, regressed a bit last year and came down to earth finishing as a borderline WR3 in 2021. The trend has continued this year with Claypool barely a top-40 wideout six games into the 2022 season, but there have been promising signs of late pointing toward Claypool following the right direction.
Now, before getting too excited, consider that rookie QB Kenny Pickett was forced out of Sunday's game with a concussion that might leave him out for a game or two going forward (see: Tua Tagovailoa). Claypool and Trubisky never clicked, with the former scoring just 9.4, 6.6, 7.6, and finally zero PPR points in the games Mitch Trubiksy started.
Pickett fixed Claypool in Week 5 giving him nine targets of which Claypool hauled in five for 50 yards and 10.0 PPR points. This last weekend, spending half-and-half of the game with each quarterback, Claypool exploded for 23.4 PPR points and a WR6 pending MNF. The outcome: 7-of-7 in receptions for 96 yards and his first touchdown of the year.
When/Whether Pickett is going to be available to make it to the field we still don't know, but you can bet on him missing a week at the very least. Claypool is a proven NFL player into his third season and Pitt is determined to feature the rookie instead of Trubisky when the freshman is fit and available after the mediocre outings by the vet to start the year.
Claypool is definitely not the worst flier to take with three-thirds of the season gone. He comes with upside for a second-half improvement as long as Pickett gets to the field and keeps improving even if that happens slowly and progressively.
