Week 14 Monday Night Football Betting Odds
Philadelphia Eagles @ Los Angeles Chargers
Spread: Eagles -1.5
Total: 41.5
This week's matchup features two teams vying for a strong playoff push as the 8-4 Eagles travel to SoFi Stadium to take on the 8-4 Chargers. The Eagles enter this game having lost each of their previous two games and are looking to get back on track offensively, as they scored a combined 36 points in those two losses.
The strength of this Eagles team has been their scoring defense, as they currently rank 10th-best in the league in terms of points per game allowed by allowing an average of just under 21 points per game. While they had a strong run defense in the first half of the season, they have slowed down and now rank in the bottom half of the league in rushing yards allowed per game.
The Chargers also have shown a strong scoring defense this season and rank just behind the Eagles, 11th-best overall, by allowing an average of 21.0 points per game. Their strong suit is no doubt their passing defense, as they have allowed an average of just 169 passing yards per game, which has them ranked second-best in the league.
This game figures to be a tight battle between two evenly matched teams and should provide plenty of entertainment on Monday Night Football.
Week 14 Monday Night Football Betting Picks
As aforementioned, both of these teams enter this matchup with relatively strong scoring defenses and pretty strong defenses overall. This is why we currently have a total set to 41.5, which is among the lowest totals on the board this week. This number makes a ton of sense to me as both of these teams love to establish the run early and often.
Currently, the Chargers rank 12th-best in the league in rushing yards per game, averaging just over 122 yards. While the Eagles only average just over 108 rushing yards per game, there is no denying that this is how they prefer to get their offense rolling through Saquon Barkley. Additionally, the Eagles will have to establish the run in this one, given how strong the Chargers' pass defense has been.
I think the Eagles will look to give Barkley the ball as many times as humanly possible to slow this game down a bit, and they may have some success with this path. Overall, the Chargers have allowed an average of over 4.6 yards per carry to running backs, so Saquon should definitely be able to get it going in this one.
The Chargers should also find some success on the ground, as the Eagles have allowed an average of nearly 5.0 yards per carry over the previous four weeks. They have also allowed the second-most rushing yards to running backs over those four weeks. Quite frankly, the Eagles look like a shell of their early-season defense.
The Chargers should also be getting rookie running back Omarion Hampton back on the field Monday night, which could not come at a better time.
The Chargers can also move the ball through the air if they choose, as they currently rank in the top half of the league in terms of passing yards per game by averaging nearly 225 yards per game. The Eagles, however, struggle here and are averaging just 196 passing yards per game on offense.
This tells me that the Chargers' offense should be able to have success and keep the game close with plenty of opportunities to win the game outright. I am not sure the correct team is favored here, given the Eagles' recent struggles on defense.
Update: This pick assumes that Justin Herbert will play, as he is currently listed as questionable. As it stands currently. Herbert is expected to play and take most of his snaps from the shotgun formation. If he ends up not playing, I would recommend the UNDER 41.5 here for all the reasons mentioned above.
The Pick: Chargers +2.5 (-105, DraftKings)
Week 14 Monday Night Football Player Props
Jalen Hurts UNDER 192.5 passing yards (-113, Hard Rock)
Jalen Hurts is not a high-flying quarterback who frequently puts up big stats in the passing game. This is noted by the fact that he has thrown for 200 or more yards in just six of 12 games this season. This does not feel like a spot he is likely to do it again, either.
Overall, as mentioned earlier, the Chargers rank second-best in the league in terms of passing yards per game allowed, allowing just over 168 yards per game. Additionally, they have struggled a bit defending the run by allowing nearly five yards per carry to running backs.
The Eagles should look to have Barkley heavily involved in this game, which will take away passing opportunities for Hurts. With the total being set so low, it appears Las Vegas feels the same way. The Chargers have also been extremely stout against the pass in recent weeks, as no quarterback has thrown for 200 or more yards since Daniel Jones last achieved this feat in Week 7.
Saquon Barkley OVER 17.5 rushing attempts (+108, DraftKings)
I said a few weeks ago, before the Monday night game against Green Bay, that the Eagles needed to get back to their roots and hand the ball off to Saquon, which they did in that game, as he carried the ball 22 times in a victory. The next week against Detroit, they did the same thing in a win, handing him the ball a whopping 26 times.
They did not continue the trend over the previous two weeks, however, as he carried the ball a combined 23 times, and the results were abysmal, with the Eagles losing both contests. This week, they get back to business and hand the ball to Barkley 20+ times, and with him getting plus odds at over 17.5 rush attempts, we are getting solid value.
You cannot throw on the Chargers as we have laid out, and the way to beat them is on the ground. I do not foresee many scenarios in which the Eagles do not hand him the ball. It is unlikely that the Chargers' offense will have an explosion even against a reeling Eagles' defense, and therefore, the Eagles should be in this game the whole way through.
Plus, Philadelphia is favored somehow, so Las Vegas seems to think this will hold true as well.

Week 14 Monday Night Football Anytime Touchdown Bet
Omarion Hampton ANYTIME touchdown (+160, DraftKings)
We are getting solid value here with Hampton at +160. He should slide right back into the feature running back role and has a solid matchup against an Eagles' defense that has allowed 13 total touchdowns to the running back position.
Over the previous four weeks, the Eagles have allowed three rushing touchdowns to running backs while also allowing an average of nearly five yards per carry, so the Chargers will certainly want to pound the rock with him.
Before his ankle injury, Hampton managed to find the end zone twice in five games and was averaging over two red zone carries per game. He also had at least four red zone carries in two of those five games.
