Carlos Correa Officially Declines Qualifying Offer
Carlos Correa officially declined the Houston Astros' one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer on Monday. This comes as no surprise, as Correa is at the top of the prized free-agent shortstop market this offseason. The 27-year-old will be highly sought after, perhaps primarily by the New York Yankees, and is unlikely to return to Houston in 2022 and beyond. The Detroit Tigers, who just signed lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to a five-year deal on Monday, could be the favorites for Correa's services as they look to go from rebuilding to contending. In his final season with the Astros, Correa made the All-Star team for the second time in his career and hit .279/.366/.485 with a career-high 26 home runs, 92 RBI and 104 runs scored in 640 plate appearances over 148 games played.
