Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 2:
David Njoku, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers tight end David Njoku appears to be the Chargers' lead tight end heading into Sunday's home matchup against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders. Njoku led the position group in targets, catches, and receiving yards in the home opener last week. The 30-year-old enters Week 2 as RotoBaller's PPR TE24 against a shaky Raiders secondary.
The Raiders defense allowed 220 passing yards to an inexperienced Miami Dolphins passing game last week. Njoku will receive a slight bump in value if Ladd McConkey (ribs) is unable to play, but will still have to compete with Charlie Kolar and Oronde Gadsden for snaps. McConkey exited Week 1 after taking a big hit and was held out of practice until participating in a limited amount on Friday.
Njoku is a touchdown-dependent tight end and should remain off fantasy radars heading into Week 2.
Kenyon Sadiq, New York Jets
New York Jets rookie first-round tight end Kenyon Sadiq found a fun way to score his first NFL touchdown, taking an end-around three yards into the end zone on the Jets' opening drive. He also caught all three of his targets for 21 yards. The bigger issue is how crowded the position remains. New York used plenty of heavy tight-end personnel against Tennessee, and Sadiq was sharing the field and opportunities with Mason Taylor, Jeremy Ruckert and Jelani Woods.
That can keep him involved without necessarily turning into a useful weekly target total.
Green Bay allowed T.J. Hockenson to score last week, but Sadiq is still only TE35 in RotoBaller's Week 2 rankings. The touchdown was encouraging. Three targets are not enough yet to make him a standard-league starter.
Evan Engram, Denver Broncos
Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram is not a strong play in Week 2 as Denver faces off against a Jacksonville Jaguars pass defense that gave up just three catches for 35 yards to Browns tight ends last week. Engram finished Week 1 as the Broncos' leader in yards receiving (43) and receptions (4), while he also recorded a touchdown reception.
He was targeted five times by quarterback Bo Nix, who struggled to get going in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Nix totaled just 131 yards passing and a quarterback rating of 13.9 in the loss, as Denver's offense looked abysmal.
Until the Broncos prove they can break out of their slow start to the year, fantasy managers would be wise to tread lightly when considering inserting Evan Engram into the starting lineup. Even after a fruitful performance last week, Engram remains the 25th-ranked tight end in RotoBaller's Week 2 rankings.
Cade Otton, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton played 98 percent of the offensive snaps during last week's season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was on the field for almost all the offensive plays, but still managed to give a lackluster performance. Otton hauled in three of his five targets for 26 yards in the loss. The 27-year-old was third on the team in targets, so there's some hope for him.
The Bucs were sloppy with three fumbles in Week 1. They'll look to clean it up in a favorable matchup against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. There's a chance that Otton gets more involved this weekend, but until he proves otherwise, fantasy managers should consider him a low-upside TE2.
AJ Barner, Seattle Seahawks
Seattle Seahawks tight end AJ Barner is a TE2 in Week 2 at the Arizona Cardinals. Barner was a non-factor in Week 1, earning just two targets. Seattle's offense was out of sorts with backup quarterback Drew Lock having to step in early for an injured Sam Darnold (glute). Better days should be ahead for Barner, but it is difficult to trust the third-year tight end until we know how the pass catchers will be supported by Lock over the next couple of weeks.
Week 2's matchup with Arizona does not present a huge challenge for Seattle's offense, so Barner could get loose in the red zone. However, deploying him in fantasy would be a very risky move. For now, leave Barner on your bench. If he demonstrates chemistry with Lock after a week of preparation, he could be worth considering in Week 3 and beyond.
