Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 9:
Tyler Allgeier, RB, Falcons
Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier found paydirt again in Week 8's 34-10 loss to the Dolphins, scoring the team's only touchdown of the day. The six-yard score came late in the fourth quarter and marked Allgeier's fourth touchdown of the season, which is tied for the team lead with Bijan Robinson, who has two rushing scores and two scores through the air. While the touchdown volume can't be ignored, the pace feels tenuous at best, as the 25-year-old garnered only six touches in the game and had three rushes for negative two yards prior to the TD plunge.
For the season, the BYU product has registered just 3.4 yards per carry, compared to Robinson's 5.2 YPC. Had the score been closer and not 34-3 at the time of the touchdown run, Allgeier may not have even been in the game. Nevertheless, he's become a potential Flex option due to his nose for the end zone, but fantasy managers need to be aware that there is a high chance of busting if he doesn't score. Things won't get easier in Week 9 on the road in New England against a defense allowing the fourth-fewest points per game (18.3), second-fewest rush yards per game (76.0), and second-fewest rush yards per attempt (3.5).
Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell has cooled off significantly after his breakout Week 4 performance. With Jaylen Warren returning to full strength, Gainwell has managed just nine carries for 36 yards over the past two games. Over that span, Gainwell has played 36% of the snaps, while Warren has commanded 61%, establishing himself as the team's lead back. Gainwell now profiles as a third-down back and a handcuff option in fantasy formats. While Gainwell could offer some PPR upside, unless Warren misses time, Gainwell holds little standalone fantasy value moving forward.
Malik Washington, WR, Dolphins
Wide receiver Malik Washington of the Miami Dolphins is a risky option, but one with some upside when his team plays host to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. The matchup is a good one for Washington, who will see a Ravens defense that ranks 27th against fantasy receivers and has struggled to defend the pass.
The diminutive receiver has seen at least five targets in six of Miami's eight games, but averages a lowly 3.5 yards per target due to a high percentage of work near the line of scrimmage. Receiver Jaylen Waddle and running back De'Von Achane are huge parts of the Miami passing game, leaving Washington as the third option, but he did catch his first touchdown of the season last week. He's a WR5 option, but has some streaming and deep-league appeal in a game that could be high scoring.
Jaylin Noel, WR, Texans
Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Jaylin Noel has been a breakout player in recent weeks, recording 11 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown on 16 targets over his last three games played. Noel has benefited from the absence of veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk (hamstring), who has missed Houston's last two contests.
If there's reason for concern with Noel, it's that he's yet to crack 45% of his team's offensive snaps this season, even in the games that Kirk has missed. He appears to be limited to working from the slot, which limits his playing time ceiling. Noel is a young player with upside, so he's definitely a name to monitor in deeper fantasy leagues. Still, it may be difficult for him to maintain his production in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos, particularly if one or both of Kirk and Nico Collins (concussion) return to the field.
