Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 2:
Quentin Johnston, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston was one of the surprise stars of Week 1, recording five catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns in his team's victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 24-year-old will now look to build on the momentum from that performance in Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Johnston finished third on the Chargers in targets in Week 1 behind fellow wideouts Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen, which is a trend that figures to continue going forward as long as all three are healthy.
The Raiders' defense forced its Week 1 opponent, the New England Patriots, into a pass-heavy game script with Patriots quarterback Drake Maye attempting 46 passes. The Chargers should have more success on the ground, but a pass-heavy approach would significantly improve Johnston's chances for fantasy success. He profiles as a low-end WR4/flex option in Week 2.
Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan finished his NFL regular-season debut with five catches on nine targets for 68 receiving yards in his team's 23-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
It was a modest start to his professional career, but it is worth noting that he led the team in targets, receptions, and receiving yards in Week 1. The rookie nearly pulled in a one-handed touchdown catch near the end of the third quarter, but the defender prevented McMillan from securing the ball as they went to the turf.
Terairoa McMillan and the Carolina Panthers will head to Arizona in Week 2 to take on the Cardinals.
Juwan Johnson, TE, New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson was heavily featured in the team's passing game in Week 1, earning 11 targets and recording eight catches for 76 yards. Perhaps most encouragingly, Johnson was on the field for 99% of his team's offensive snaps.
With Saints tight ends Taysom Hill (knee) and Foster Moreau (knee) both sidelined by injuries until at least Week 5, Johnson could continue to shoulder a heavy workload in the games to come. New Orleans logged 46 pass attempts in Week 1, so even if Johnson's target share drops a bit going forward, he could still be a useful player in PPR-scoring formats.
Juwan Johnson should be added by fantasy managers as a tight end insurance policy or an injury replacement in deep leagues.
DJ Moore, WR, Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore (abdomen/groin) was listed as a full participant during Wednesday's practice session. The 28-year-old appeared to have suffered this injury in the fourth quarter of their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
However, seeing him log a full practice on Wednesday suggests the 28-year-old is not in any danger of missing their next game against the Detroit Lions. In their loss to the Vikings, Moore caught three of his five targets for 68 yards.
Second-year wideout Rome Odunze appears to have emerged as Caleb Williams's top target as he saw nine targets in this contest. Despite this, Moore projects to be a low-end WR2/high-end WR3 in a potentially high-scoring game against the Detroit Lions this Sunday.
Ricky Pearsall, WR, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is set to see an elevated workload in Sunday's meeting with the New Orleans Saints due to a myriad of injuries his team has faced. The 49ers won their opening matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, but it didn't come without some collateral damage.
Tight end George Kittle (hamstring) landed on IR with a hamstring injury, while fellow wideout Jauan Jennings (shoulder) picked up a shoulder issue of his own. Jennings isn't a lock to play in Week 2, leaving Pearsall and running back Christian McCaffrey as the 49ers' top options against New Orleans.
Unfortunately, quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) isn't likely to start either, meaning Pearsall could -- and will probably -- be catching passes from former New England Patriot Mac Jones. The University of Florida product's target quality gets a downgrade if that's the case, but hopefully, his volume will help mitigate that.
