Recent Fantasy Football Running Back News

Breece Hall, New York Jets

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt writes that New York Jets running back Breece Hall "wasn't (the team's) best running back in training camp." Rosenblatt also reports that, based on the way Jets' coaches have raved about second-year back Braelon Allen, he wouldn't be surprised if Allen "overtakes (Hall) completely as the lead back at some point."

There's been a steady drumbeat of reporting indicating a split workload in the Jets' backfield this season. That could lead to Hall being limited to mostly passing-down work, which may mean he is currently overvalued in fantasy drafts as one of the first 15-20 running backs off the board. Hall remains a very talented player who had an extremely productive fantasy season as recently as 2023, so he's a risky pick due to the variance between his floor and ceiling.

TreVeyon Henderson, New England Patriots

The New England Patriots may have struck gold with rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson. The former Ohio State star has flashed explosiveness throughout camp, drawing comparisons to the excitement Curtis Martin generated as a rookie. Henderson's versatility should earn him touches early, with opportunities in both the return game and as a change-of-pace option behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

Stevenson remains the lead back, but ball security issues could open the door for Henderson to carve out a larger share of the workload. With his burst, vision, and playmaking ability, Henderson is positioned to be one of New England's most dynamic weapons.

Dylan Sampson, Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns rookie Dylan Sampson has emerged as the clear No. 2 back behind Jerome Ford, with Quinshon Judkins still unsigned. Sampson has shown burst and reliability in camp, locking down the change-of-pace role. Ford, meanwhile, has never logged more than 250 touches in a season, leaving the door open for Sampson to carve out meaningful snaps or even push for a bigger role if Ford falters. His skill set makes him a versatile complement in Cleveland's backfield. Fantasy managers should view Sampson as a valuable late-round flier with legitimate upside if the backfield shifts in his favor.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Washington Commanders

Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic writes that it's "still too early to know" how much playing time Washington Commanders rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt will receive early in the season. Croskey-Merritt was one of the breakout stars of training camp, and the Commanders seemingly cleared a spot for him by trading away incumbent back Brian Robinson Jr. However, Washington still has an established veteran in Austin Ekeler to play passing downs, and third-year back Chris Rodriguez Jr. is expected to earn touches as well.

There's a pathway for Croskey-Merritt to seize the lead role in Washington at some point this season, but the Commanders may open the season with more of a committee approach. Croskey-Merritt has fantasy RB2 upside. Still, managers should draft the 24-year-old expecting RB3/flex production.

Ollie Gordon II, Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins rookie running back Ollie Gordon II is expected to open the season as the RB2 behind De'Von Achane (calf), with Jaylen Wright (leg) likely sidelined for the first few weeks. Achane is trending toward playing Week 1, but Gordon should see rotational snaps and remains a valuable handcuff in case of setbacks. He'll face a Colts defense that ranked 24th against the run in 2024. While his short-term fantasy appeal is limited, Gordon is worth stashing as insurance and could become a plug-and-play option if Achane were to suffer any setbacks.

Jaylen Wright, Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins running back Jaylen Wright (leg) had surgery on his injured leg and could be back "Septemberish," according to head coach Mike McDaniel. Wright is not out for the entire season, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The 22-year-old is expected to miss multiple weeks, although an exact timetable is not known. With De'Von Achane (calf) also battling a nagging calf injury that could put him up in the air for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts, it's possible that rookie Ollie Gordon II could serve as Miami's primary ball-carrier to open the 2025 regular season.

Achane and Wright should still be drafted in all fantasy formats, but these injuries have also made Gordon much more intriguing as a late-round flier, especially as a handcuff to Achane. Wright has not gone on Injured Reserve, which means Miami thinks he can return within the first four weeks of the season.

Najee Harris, Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that running back Najee Harris (eye) could play in Week 1, according to the team's official website. The first-year Charger returned to practice on Wednesday and has not been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, opening up the possibility he is active for the season opener against Kansas City. Harris sustained the injury during a July 4 fireworks accident and had not practiced since June. When healthy, he's likely to split work with rookie Omarion Hampton.
